I have a winch I plan on mounting to use on the front of a skid steer. The skid has a 16gpm aux. pump. What I dont know is how to figure out what size of hydraulic motor to use or what size of hose. Any ideas?

Thanks, Jim

16GPM at what RPM?

How much horsepower does the pump require to make 16GPM at that RPM?

What is the winch rated at, for single line pull?

I have read the post and since no one has real answered you I will try.

First here are the basic formulas you need too use to answer your questions.

1. What size motor?

Horsepower= Pressure(PSIG)X Flow(GPM)/1714. 1714 is a constant that is used.

So, if you have a pump providing 16GPM and 2500 PSI than this would be: 2500X16/1714= 23HP

2. What size hose assembly?

Velocity= 0. 3208XGPM/Internal Area (Sq inches). Area =pi(rx2)

So for a given hose size of a 1/2 ID this would be:

0. 3208X16/(3. 14159... )(. 25x2)= 5. 13/17. 28=. 3 a foot per second

Another thing to remember, is the hose ID should be approximately the same size has the fitting that is being used for the pump. That is if the pump has thread size for a 1/2" fitting, than the hose should be 1/2 ID also.

Hope this helps?

Ok, thats what I was looking for; a formula. I should have posted my question a lot clearer as to what information I was looking for.

I will have to do a little more research to figure out the hp/gpm data.

Thanks, Jim
