The weather looks good. I guess they have redone Churchhill Downs.

I DO NOT want Steinbrenner's horse (Bellamy Road) the be in the money. I'd like to see him finish last. :-laf

I don't think I'll get up there this year. I have been going to Keeneland race course here in Lexington for the past couple of years to watch the derby. It sounds dumb to go to a track where there is no live racing, but its a good time. You can bring your own booze, and bet. There's usually about 35,000 people there (mostly girls :D ). Plus it doesn't hurt that admission is free (I think) and it's only about 2 miles from my house. The Derby is a BLAST!

Holy Cow

What a race. Spanish Chestnut wore all the horses out early. I didn't think he was gonna run of gas for awhile. It looked like Afleet Alex was a good bet there for awhile. The early times were blistering fast. Maybe faster than Secretariat. Zito had 25% of the field, and didn't even finish in the money. :-laf Id hate to be Brian Cashman or Joe Torre on Monday when the Boss get back in town. :-laf

Secretariat would have had 12 lengths on Giacomo :p

Did anybody win any money? The payouts were HUGE.

You're right, that was one heck of a race. I didn't win any money this time around, but I only lost $2. :D There's always the Preakness. :-laf

When they showed Zito right after the horses crossed the line, it looked like he was going to cry. :-laf Then it looked like he might pass out for a second. I almost felt bad for the guy, but who cares, he's won it before and it wasn't a make or break thing for him.

Every year, I like horse racing a little more and pro sports a little less. The atmosphere is just soooo much better. It's like, you have your favorite, but you don't hate the others unlike most other sports. Its odd, but I think these horses are smarter than some of the pro players these days. :-laf

i also have really grown to love horse racing over the years. i get more excited to watch the kentucky derby than the world series or the super bowl.

Dl5treez,

If you get time can you figure out how fast the were going early in the race. I'm wondering if it was faster than Secretariat's 45 MPH average in '73.

1/4 mile pole---22 1/5 secs

1/2 mile pole---45 1/5 secs

3/4 mile pole---1:09 2/5 secs

Found this on a web page, I don't know if it's what you are looking for but I'll post it anyways. Hope it helps.

Secretariat would join an elite list of immortals on that First Saturday of May in 1973 when he got his Kentucky Derby. All hats were off to him for an electrifying performance that included a new track record of 1:59 2/5.

Time is often overrated as a factor in evaluating racing performance, mostly because times vary so much by track condition and how the race was run. And jockeys don't try to set speed records. They just want to win the race in whatever time it takes.

But racing fans will always talk about Secretariat's Kentucky Derby time. First, because his final time of 1:59 2/5 broke the track record for 1 1/4 miles in the world's most important horse race. And second, because The Big Red Horse ran faster every quarter mile of the race, just building power like a locomotive and finishing like a jet.

To come up with the horse's "fractional" times, experts began with the electronically-recorded times for the leader for each of the five quarter miles of the 1 1/4 miles Derby. Then, by figuring Secretariat's racing position in relation to those times, they were able to extrapolate Secretariat's own times for each quarter mile. They were something!

Secretariat's quarter mile fractions:

0:25 1/5

0:24

0:23 4/5

0:23 2/5

0:23

Good eye Dl5treez.

Why the heck did I write 1½ miles for the Derby last year. I think I had The Belmont on my mind. I'm an idiot. :-laf

I believe the times listed from Saturdays race would have been by Spanish Chestnut, since he was leading early. I knew he was flying. The only problem was he ran out of gas.

CHECK THIS OUT!!! Poor Guy. :-laf

AP-A man is out thousands of dollars. After he lost his winning Kentucky Derby ticket. Chris Hertzog bought a winning ticket at Turf Paradise race track in Arizona. His winning bet on long-shot Giacomo would have paid $890,000. He's still hoping he to get the money, but now has to wait for officials at the track to make a decision

My heart skipped a beat when Afleet Alex almost dumped it at Pimlico. I think if he had come in 2nd, and Scrappy-T first, they would have given Alex the win anyway. Alfeet Alex is one tough horse. Too bad he didn't win at Churchhill Downs. He would have been another fan favorite like Smarty Jones.

Horses are tough but fragile. Big body supported by tiny legs.

I didn't try for tickets this winter for the Belmont Stakes (Lottery drawing only). They had a BIG price increase and I had a gut feeling there wouldn't be a triple crown title on the line this year.

I brought up last years thread again....

Did anybody go to Churchhill Downs for todays races?

It's only 5:36 EST, going to start watching NBC now.

You can watch the race again here:

Elite1,

You came in 7th. Not bad for a field of 20. ;)

Barbaro had a real impressive win. I'll bet he will be the heavy favorite at the Preakness. Maybe 1-5 odds?

I did not put my name in the lottery for Belmont Stakes tickets this year. I hope it does not come back to bite me in the ***.

There was a Dead Heat for 4th place. What happens to the Superfecta and the pick 10? ticket holders?

Secretariat would have beat Barbaro to the wire by about 11 lengths. ;)
