Recreational Trailer Endorsement

A driver must have a fifth-wheel recreational trailer endorsement added to the Class C driver license to pull a fifth-wheel recreational trailer over 10,000 Ibs. , but not over 15,000 Ibs. GVWR, which is not used for hire. This endorsement is not required if the driver has a Class A or Noncommercial Class A driver license.

There is no fee unless your license expires within six months

You will take a law test for a noncommercial Class A license based on the information contained in this booklet. You must also pass the Class C law test unless you qualified for a Class C license within the past twelve month.

You are not required to submit a Health questionaire.

You are not required to take a driving test to add a Recreational Trailer endorsement to your current license.

No other test are required.

It must be a California thing. I just called the DMV to get more information on this and they stated that if a cop'er pulls anyone over driving a fifth wheel that weighs more then 10,000 but not over 15,000 will be cited for not having the endorsement added to their drivers license!

I think it's a great idea... I think all the senior citizens in their 60,000 lb. 'campers' should have a CDL, too... at least a physical!

I'm surprised you don't need the "HAZ MAT" endorcement as well... . Never know what is in those dump tanks.

Another reason (as if I needed another) NOT to live in CA.

Not required in Texas. Specific exemption is made in the CDL regulations for recreational vehicles used for private use.

I have the endorsement - it's a Restriction 41 on the back of my license. If I remember correctly a health questionaire IS required but it's the one I fill out - not a medical exam by a doctor. The written test is incredibly easy - anybody could pass it. No driving test required.

DMV employees had no idea what I was talking about, they had to look it up. I think I was the only person to ever ask about the endorsement at the Santa Rosa DMV.

Most LEOs, including CHP, are unaware of the requirement. Not to say that the one officer that pulls you over wouldn't know about it but considering most of the officers I work with, yes, I'm a cop, don't have a clue about the requirement.....

Yep, another 'right' that CA is taking away from the citizens..... Sure, if you say so.

NVR FNSH,

what are the CORRECT requirements to add this endorsement to my Class C. Everyone in the DMV didnt know what I was talking about.

So far I had to retake my Class C, and then I had to Take the noncommercial Class A, and had to fill out the Health Questionare which I dont care about, BUT!

They made me pay a fee, now there making me take a driving test with my fifth wheel. I showed them the pamphlet and they still stated that I have to take a driving test.

So basically after Im done with this whole thing Im going to have a noncommercial Class A drivers license, I find it funny that they removed my Class C and gave me a permit with a Class A :-laf . I dont mind having the Class A it worth a shot taking the driving test, but if I dont have to which the pamplets states why should I.

I am just looking at adding this endorsement just in case an accident where to occur and the offficer asks if I have the endorsement I dont have to worry about the citation and or being sued by anyone.

Anyone here work with the DMV to help me with the correct answers.

Went on CA DMv web site, if you are under 15k GVR, then just an endorsement is required. If over 15k GVR then a non-commercial Class A license is required. Looks like I am getting a new license.

I took a written test only - NO DRIVING. I still have a Class C with M1 endorsement and Restriction 41. I think all I had was the RV Driving Pamphlet and it stated a written test was the only thing required. I don't remember having to re-take the Class C or M1 written tests - although that may depend on how close you are to your renewal date. I'd get the Non-commercial Class A and be done with it IF there were no insurance (read $$$$) issues with me having a non-commercial Class A.

Sorry I'm not more help but we're talking about the DMV - if you don't like the answer you get just go to a different office.....

I pull a small motorcycle trailer behind my 26ft 5TH wheel.

The chp told me I needed a non commercial class A.

The dmv took my 25 dollars and I took the written test.

They then told me I still couldn't tow my 2 small trailers with anything but a full commercial class A with a doubles endorsement.

I need to show up with an full on Safeway truck with 2 trailers to get classified correctly.

When I went to take my driving test with my 26 ft trailer the DMV woman said it wasn't big enough to take the test with.

Now they have my money and I am towing 2 trailers with just my class C.

Maybe I will get the recreational endorsement just to make me look like I am trying to comply...

Then I am moving to IDAHO to escape the madness Oo.

I think this is something that will eventually become a rule all over. I live in Saskatchewan, Canada and here you need a class 1 licence with an endorsement for any trailer over 10,000 lbs. The licence consists of a written test, a driving test with the trailer and a medical. The medical must be renewed every 5 years and after age 65 it must be renewed annually. I think this is a good idea as it seems any one can buy these big units and hit the road without any driving experience at all.

You might also want to know that with a class a license some infractions carry more points than with a class c

oK, I live in the Republic of Kalifornia too.

This title of this thread might need to be changed because when I read others' comments on drivers licenses requirements in other threads they use the term CDL, which to me is a California Drivers License, but I know they mean Commercial Drivers License.

Anyway, just to clarify. This is for 5th wheel trailers only, correct?

I pull a 26' trailer, max gross weight of 11,000#, class C is ok?

"Techically" maybe not? But, everyone doing it, doesn't make it legal.

It is difficult at times to read the rules when every other paragraph has reference some other section multiple times and your're flipping back and forth to decipher the rule.

I think it is a good idea to see if a person can handle what they want to drive & tow. But only in kalfornia do they have imbasalls that have positively no idea whats going on! I use to live in Ontario (CA), glad I escaped & they didn't come after me Oo. !

We're just happy you left :D

I called the DMV in Sacramento and they advised me that they do have to put the Restriction 41 on your drivers license and that the driving test is now required. I guess you guys with the Restriction 41 got lucky, now I have to try to find time to schedule the driving test in my time amongst other things.
