I posted this over on the "2nd Gen/No Engine transmission" section with no responces yet. Thought I'd try over here.

Does anyone have any experience with the Flaming River steering shaft replacement? I've read many posts regarding the Borgesen with some members giving negative comments. I've seen very few posts on the Flaming River option with all being positive.

Thanks in advance.

From what I've seen on their site, they get around $299. 00.

I'm going to try a home remedy to stiffen the OEM shaft. I bought a stock piece of angle iron. I'm going to fashion two pieces that I'll clamp on the steering shaft facing each other ( opposite sides ). This,,,,, should stiffen the shaft to the point that it shouldn't,,, CLUNK,, any more and still be able to collapse in the event of a front end impact.

If this works, I'll just have saved $295. 00.

I installed a Flaming River shaft (purchased from Rickson Truck) at around 50K miles. I now have 160K miles on the truck and have had no complaints about or problems with the shaft.

The only time I had a problem was my own fault. The shop had replaced my steering gear and properly centered the pitman arm, which put the steering wheel off-center. I removed the shaft from the gear and re-centered the wheel. But I neglected to properly torque and loctite the nuts when I reattached the shaft. It was quite loose when I investigated the rattle.

As far as I'm concerned, it was money well spent.

I installed one on my 95 Ram. I had to shorten the FR1517, not a big deal. My brother put a Borg. on his truck, imo the Flaming River is better quality and I'd do F. R. again

Question if you please? What is the problem with the original shafts and by replacing them with the new one, what are you exactly fixing  I see the word clunk and find myself wondering what that means exactly? What is clunking? Just looking for some knowledge here. Thanks in advance. :)

Does anyone know the proper Flaming River part number for a shaft to fit an '01 2500 4x4 ??

I've had it with the OEM units :-{} , had 3 in the last 4 years. (312,000kms)

Tired of having either the slip joint loose or the u-joints worn out. :{

thanks in advance

Rick

TMTT,

That is the exact Flaming River steering shaft I purchased. Although they don't all look quite like that, that particular one has the optional $125. polish/plating option (as mine does)... they are very fine quality!

Sadly enough, I purchased mine over a year ago now (just after Diesel Thunder III), and still haven't installed it yet!!!!

Soon! :D

think I still have a warranty? :-laf
