Anyone know what "Heavy Water" is?

Happy Birthday Figgy!

Hemi,
If memory serves me correctly from my AF schooling on Atomic Weapons it was the prime ingredient that the Germans and the Americans were working on to perfect the first Atomic Weapons. It was so classified in the early '50s that they wouldn't even tell us the relationship even when I had worked my way up to where I was susposed to drop one of he darned things on some Ruskies head. I am pretty sure that there is more involved than adding weight to pure H2O.
Skeet
I went back and read Doc's link and it sort of all came together. They needed the heavy water to sustain the atomic reaction in the bombs. Might be intresting to search the net on the "Manhattan Project" (sp?)which was our code name for the weapon development.

"Heavy Water"? Will it help engine efficiency if used in our radiators? How about as windshield washer fluid? Any BOMBing capabilities on our trucks?

Inquiring minds want to know! #ad

"Heavy Water" is usually found in the truck, on the highway somewhere around the sign that says NEXT REST AREA 65 MILES!!!!!

Hemi,
Upon reflection, I think I may have misled you. The A-bombs contained no water that I know of. Believe they need the 'heavy water' to sustain the reaction in the reactors which produced U-235 (uranium) in sufficient quantities to mass produce weapons grade U-235. All this was so long ago that it only comes back in bits and pieces. Would be awful after all these years to find out I went thru all that training just to drop "water Baloons'from a B-47. #ad

I thought that Heavy Water was H2O2, the makings for the Hydrogen bomb.

Doc`s link explains it pretty good. I`ll bet heavy water is the water that the control rods are being lowered and lifted out of. The water covering the core. Its says its harmless, you could drink if you wanted too. #ad

Heavy water is found in nature and is flamible. I had an uncle that was an under water welder that blow up when he was welding on an oil rig and a pocket of heavy water came through. If I recall from my chemistry day there are two heavy waters H3O and H4O both are used to make the hydrogen bomb.

Actually, the difference between heavy water and normal water is in the hydrogen atoms. Normal hydrogen is the simplest of all atoms. They consist of one proton and one electron. "Heavy" hydrogen, also called deuterium, consists of one proton, one neutron, and one electron. The ratio of hydrogen atoms to oxygen atoms in heavy water is still 2 hydrogens to one oxygen. Hope this helps.

Doc,
It wouldn't hurt you to drink it. But it would cost you to do so. Heavy water costs hundreds of dollars per gallon.
The Canadians use heavy water in their nuclear power reactors. It acts as both coolant and moderator(a moderator in a reactor is used to slow down the neutrons and make them available to split atoms, thereby allowing the reaction to continue). The fact that the hydrogen atoms in heavy water already have a neutron in the nucleus, they will not absorb a neutron. Normal or "light" water will, thereby absorbing some neutrons that would be available for fission. This property allows Canadian reactors to use natural, unenriched Uranium for fuel. American reactors use enriched Uranium fuel and normal water for both coolant and moderator.
Enrichment refers to the U235 isotope content. U235 makes up 0. 8% of natural Uranium and is fissile(splittable). This is the nuclear fuel reactors run on. American reactors need this isotope enriched to 3-4% before they can operate with light water acting as a moderator.
This enrichment process is very expensive. American power companies have chosen to use expensive fuel, and cheap coolant. The Canadians have chosen to use cheap fuel and expensive coolant. This is probably much more than any of you wanted to know, but here it is.

Great Post on what heavy water is Riflesmith. #ad
Do you work in the Nuclear Power Industry?

When are Fusion Reactors going to be ready to go Online?

[This message has been edited by HEMI®Dart (edited 03-29-2000). ]

I presently work in a coal fired power plant. I started in the power industry in a nuclear plant in New York.
Fusion is a long way off, in my opinion. The main problem is the extreme temperatures generated by the fusion process. They are in excess of 20 million degrees and cannot be contained, much less harnessed, with current technology. Current experimental designs actually work(for very short periods of time) by doing everything possible to minimize heat transfer(to avoid vaporizing the vessel around the reaction).
Heavy hydrogen and heavy, heavy hydrogen(hydrogen atoms that have two neutrons in the nucleus, also known as tritium) are the nuclear fuels in the fusion process. It would be much cleaner than fission reactors currently in use. It would be a bad day for big oil. It would certainly be hard to feel sorry for big oil or OPEC based on recent events!

Doc Tinker,
One thing for sure. If "heavy water" put any more strain on my bladder than regular water, at my age, I sure don't want any of it. Just think what it would do to my homebrew. Would have very little time for drinking and be spending more time in the john. #ad

Thank you for the education on heavy water and fusion , Riflesmith #ad
and Wade & Skeet for their versions of heavy water. . lol #ad

I saw on public television a couple of years ago that someone had accomplished "Cold Fusion". It turned out to be a scam #ad

Found an interesting website. Great pictures and info. Funny how it mentions nothing about the cost overruns of the project. It is expected to be completed in 2004. It was projected to cost $5. 8 Billion when ground was broken in 1991. The new pricetag in now $13. 6 Billion Unbeliveable!! Its the BIG dig.
