Dweys cummins conversions (chevys)

I am so ****** right now i cant hardly stand it, I did not know when i bought this crap that I had to chop the heck out of my transmission case. What a load of crap that is. And of course they wont take it back, I think it needs to say it on the page where the adapters are. I cant believe it cant be done w/o having to chop the case up. I had a small block ford adapter from cummins and the starter fit just fine. I have also learned since I bought this crap there is a new place making adapters and they say the trans dont need chopped up. Anyone know about that place? Sorry for the rant But Im am so upset I had to chop this case up on a $4000 transmission.

RSP - Contact autoworld (on this forum - Ken & Dawna). They've done hundreds of conversions and should be very helpful.

Also, superduty (also here, I believe) has done a lot of his own machine work on the Fords. My recollection is that he has some alternatives...

Good luck,

Mark

I did contact Autoworld back in the summer. I told the lady I wanted an adapter for an E40D and she said No way I could use an E40D   so they dont have any adapters for it. Cant imagine why she told me that if they supposedly do so many conversions.

Another good reason to stay with Dodge/Cummins. My daddy away said, if it ain't broke, don't fix it

HUH?

I feel the same way about autoworld as you feel about fordcummins! I helped my buddy do a chevy conversion with parts from autoworld not one was right, the motor mounts had to be cut apart an rewelded the a/c bracket had to be modified, the intercooler tubes. I wont go any further. Ken sounds real helpful when you talk to him about buying his product, but when it comes down to it once you get the parts that dont fit hes not worth talking to after. His explination was well I think I remember one guy had to do this or another that. It cost more time to modify what came from autoworld than what it would have taken to fab up from scratch.

RSP, you need to contact Scott at Destroked . I have his plate for my conversion and it uses a Ford 6. 0 starter that requires no case hacking whatsoever. He also has a really nice billet flexplate that allows you to use an off the shelf 4R100 tc.

Upon Kai's recommendation, i also have the destroked.com kit in my truck. By far, the best guy to deal with. It went together perfectly, like factory. Absolutely worth it to buy his kit, which i believe is now available from dealers such as ATS. Unfortunately, i bought my first bad kit from cumminsstuff.com who has to be the worst of all of them. My BTS was also clearanced, though it shouldn't affect its integrity at all.

I have also dealt with autoworldmt.com. Bought a bunch of parts from them this summer and though they promised answers and instructions after months of emails and phone calls, they never came through. Roger was far more informative over the phone.

Autoworld really couldn't answer much and would tell me contradictory things like sending wiring instructions that were different, multiple times, yet for exactly the same engine. Required going back and forth trying to clear up mistakes. They were always behind, delayed shipping, didn't tell me costs, just charged me, made it hard to be happy. I had high expectations but had to give up on them.

Its true, autoworld does not use Ford automatics in their conversions. I had originally wanted an Allison 1000 and they always urged me to either put a manual in my Excursion, or a Chrylser transmission. Fortunately, my engine mounts were made better what tigdiesel received, but still off as the mounts put the turbo against the HVAC so some lines had to be relocated. They weren't sure if they'd sent me the right mounts so they described what they should look like to me over the phone.

Destroked is awesome. The flex plate is probably indestructible, guaranteed to a good 1,000 hp. Surpasses SFI specifications. Wish his kit had been available this summer. After going through the quagmire other folks have put me through since summer, i have yet to even hear my Cummins start. Only 5 days left, but i hope to have it on the road by Christmas. This project sure didn't go the way everyone assured me it would. Seemed like such a simple idea. I'll post when it done.

I know all about Scott and Destroked.com After the Fact, But What was I supposed to do, Eat the grand I paid FCRAP.com and buy the Destroked stuff? I sure wish I had the money to do that cause I would have sent this crap back to Montana free of charge with a Nice message attached to it. :-{}

Ya it was funny the Autoworld lady babbled for 5 min telling me I could not use an E40D behind the Cummins. I just listened to her for a while and said "OK thanks" and have never found a reason to call them back.

Yea, autoworldmt doesnt like the automatics, especially the Fords in their conversions. It is funny to hear that people think the E4OD wont stand up to Cummins torque. It all depends on who builds it...

Anyway, I used FordCummins.com parts in my swap. The bellhousing adapter worked just fine, I had to notch my bellhousing, and Roger "forgot" to tell me that before I got everything but the starter installed. That ****** me off, but what can you do, I notched the bellhousing and it worked like he said. The motor mounts I got from them worked just fine, but I could have made them alot cheaper myself. Their tach adapter worked fine, along with all the wiring info he gave me for cruise control and tach functions. They are definitely not the best company to deal with, but I did get my stuff basically on time, and got it all together.

Getting back to your original post, if you have a $4k transmission - & have not cut it yet - I'd dump the fordcummins kit on EBay & get one from destroked. . Done. . You sound pretty bitter right now, and the experience WILL NOT GET ANY BETTER if you proceed in the same direction with the kit you have. . Pure and simple - cut your losses & make it right. . . . right now. . It's not gonna be cheap, but at least you'll sleep better at night knowing you have a properly engineered product with good support. . (so I've heard)

I bought my kit from Autoworld, & had a great experience. . (engine mounts, AC adapter, AC pulley) Ken's advice was sound, but not 100% - maybe 95%. . :) (There were some suggestions that didn't match my truck, but it didn't sway my opinion of the guy one bit. . ) He saved me time and money Vs. trying to do this 100% on my own...

I have tried to sell the crap and I went ahead and cut the trans up since I had no choice. All I can say is FC.com will NOT get any good words from me, I will tell EVERYONE I can that they suck. IMO if they do business like that People need to know so they dont make the Costly mistake I have. I just wish I had known before hand. I even called the Morons yesterday to ask what size the starter bolts were, I was told 10mm 1. 5 pitch. So I run to town (W/O the adapter) get the bolts and get back to the shop And CRAP they were wrong. So I loaded the adapter took it to town and the bolts were 10mm 1. 25 pitch.

You sound pretty bitter right now

LOL Thats an understatement.

I had a great experience with autoworld when i did my conversion. i think they are more chevy specific though. I know that they have done some fords but I think that they have done more chevies. Everything that i got from them fit fine and the advice that I got saved me tons of money too.

Any one useing ford cummins.com

i have called them for a clutch line fitting Id and they helped me fine

Instead of buying the full kit ,why not just use the mounts

and use the dodge transmission , it makes most sence if you got to hack up

partsto make it fit , be better off to sell the stock transmission and buy drive lines etc than all the hassels

I think it's because he all ready has a good amount of money in the Ford transmission.

Well I did not use a Ford transmission in my conversion, I have the whole Dodge/Cummins drivetrain in my Ford. I bought the motor mounts, water necks, etc. from FordCummins.com and everything went together like it was supposed to. I called Roger several times to ask questions about wiring, etc and always was pleasent and informative to talk with. I could not be happier with my conversion parts. Only thing is my tach is reading a little high and I have not figured that out yet. Has to be something with it being a tach form a gasser.

Sorry to hear you have had a bad experience with your conversion.

Good luck with it.

Yeah, Roger is good on the phone, more answers ready than anyone else. But from everyone else's warnings, i didn't go with his kit. I ate the $1,100+ on the kit that didn't even work from cumminsstuff.com. Have yet to try eBay. It was requiring too much modification and i didn't want to go through all of that. Can't say enough about how good the destroked kit is. I will always be glad i chose to go with it over others. Quality is heads and shoulders above.

Autoworld didn't bother telling me they were sending me a fan belt. I'd already bought a stock replacement i thought would work but didn't. They charged me for a belt the shipped from Montana, without telling me, that didn't even come close to fitting. Never gave me directions on things like how to wire up cruise control... so it isn't even in my truck. I asked for months, what more could i do?

No one told me about water necks. Really hard to track down 2 1/4" ID flexible radiator hose. I ordered a 27" length of Gates. Finally got some yesterday and am using pipe to reduce it to the radiator for the lower hose. I've spent an entire week on it but have yet to fit it all together, ready for action. I wish someone would offer a complete kit with absolutely everything you need. Napa had adapters for my PSD sensors. Put the oil pressure on top of the oil filter.

I've gotten screwed at every angle on this project. Autoworld left me in the dark. Paid a guy in full to finish my truck for me when i left town and he never showed up again. Lost over a grand on the wrong kit, mechanic stole my impact, been working on this truck since summer and have yet to hear this engine run.

I'm doing most of the work while i've got a free week at Royce's 4x4 next to Matt Heady's monster truck shop. I've got great people to work with now but figuring out this radiator has taken all week. Just about have the 5" exhaust finished. Hope to have it done shortly after the new year. It will be the ultimate blow if this engine doesn't run. I really thought it would take just a couple weeks but i've never had the right parts at hand. Definitely been the heftiest project i've ever seen. Should have been so simple.

The radiator should have been one of the simplest things to hook up. Between this forum and cummins-conversion.com I would think the info would be out there for you. If you are putting a 94 12V into a SD or Excursion (as your signature shows) you can use a upper radiator hose from a 24V, trim a few inches off of it and it works perfectly. As for the lower radiator hose. It'll take 2 pieces, using a pair of pipe fittings in the middle to reduce the size. The easiest thing to do is get a sketch of what you need, then go to the local parts store and walk down their radiator hose aisle. Sorry that you are having such a bad time with your swap, sometimes it can be frustrating. The cruise control is only a matter of hooking up 6 wires, and using a cruise control servo from any Ford gasser pickup from 92-04.

. . wow. . Suddenly I don't feel as "bad" about the amount of work and money in my truck. . You got some problems!!!!! My main issue has been *me* - WAY too many ideas, WAY too many dead-end tangents on this project. . I will have myself to thank or curse for the results, and it's been a year to boot... .

MCCallie - if you're ever in Rio Rancho, Nuevo Mexico, look me up - I'll buy a round or two at the local microbrewery. . !!!

We used the fordcummins mounts and adapters on my brothers truck and they worked fine no problems. We used autoworlds mounts on my buddy's chevy conversion they worked ok had to do some shimming to get to set level but worked ok. My truck is the next on the list ford 350 I'm planning on building all my mounts and brackets and making my own water necks and a/c mounts.
