Yes

I bought and Aeroturbine with 4" downpipe and two straight sections (kept the 4" tailpipe). The performance was noticably better and the EGTs were down, but under a load it was LOUD. It took a while to figure out what to do. I tried alot of different things that didn't work and it seemed that no one had any answers. I finally talked to Rip Rook, what a nice guy and he told me what he knew about exhaust systems and what he didn't (no BS there). Anyway, long story short, I moved the AT to the downpipe and put a Diamond Eye louvered muffler in the stock position and everything went quiet. I mean I can't tell the difference from stock under all driving conditions except for the performance that didn't seem to change. Another member here (Lawdog 1) Did the same thing with his Hogg exhaust. He got it with their Augmentor muffler (which is simular to the Aeroturbine) and a straight throwgh muffler and configured them the same as I did mine. Even though I haven't heard it he tells me that it is pretty quiet and he is well pleased.

Hope this helps,

I thought I had nailed down a good exhaust and did this:

4" down pipe into 5" pipe then into the new Donaldson "Silent Partner" 51" muffler. At 3" of water it measures 2652

airflow cfm and at 1" it measures 1630 cfm.

With a 5" inlet and outlet I used a 5" tail pipe. Light unloaded cruise is tolerable but towing fills the cab with a deep horrible drone that has to go!

I am thinking the exhaust note is echoing in the 5" tail pipe and stepping back to a 4" tail pipe might do it but dunno.

Thanks for the info on what you did.

I'm running a straight 4" system with Rip's Diamond Eye muffler and I really like it. I can't compare it to what it's like having an Aeroturbine with it but I've got no drone. You can hear the turbo a lot more than stock and its a little barky off idle but I would in no way say loud.

Hi Scott, do you do any towing? I ask cuz I coulda probably lived with what I did unloaded but towing especially on grades is where I have run into the big drone noise.

Oh yea, it's fine. With the window up I hear the engine but not the exhaust. I love it actually, roll the windows up and it's stock, then roll 'em down for the tunnels and hammer on it!

Silverline 4" Aeroturbine

Put them on my 97, I know, I know not the same thing but it is really close in a lot of ways. Well anyway the system is awesome sounds better than any exhaust system I've heard on a diesel. However I admit I don't care for straight pipes too loud wouldn't want to tow with them either!

Just my opinion,thanks eg

Matt,

Have you thought of keeping the downpipe and changing the rest to 4". No more power than you are running, 4" is more than adequate.

Anyway, what I learned from Rip was in order to get rid of the drone you need to stiffen up the exhaust. Using two mufflers will help stiffen it up, also make sure you have plenty of hangers.

Yes I have, this weekend I may take off the tail pipe just to see what that does for a test. The muff was kinda spendy so I hate to trash it. Looking at the design of my muff I can't see how it could be noisy. Its just the drone at 1500-1900 rpm's under load that stinks. Other than that it sounds great.

I have the same diamond eye setup and agree 100%.

Louder on outside and stock with windows up on inside.

FWIW, I put a Walker 21471 on my 97 and it was too loud to have the right window down for very long. I was also tired of buying mufflers so I drilled holes in the outer chambers, packed them with steel wool and screwed patches over the holes. It has a very nice low tone and much quieter now. I got the idea from some Walker Steelpacks I had in the 60s and really liked. Craig

JMcDowell,

The stock exhaust isn't real quiet on the outside of the truck. A friend of mine got one and I was suprised at the way it sounded pulling away. Sounded kind of mean for a stock truck. :D

Matt, I've been thinking about switching to a 52" Donaldson with 4" in, 4" out and 4" from turbo back... headed toward the same goals you are... less back pressure and without increasing the noise level. I tow and am not headed to extreme HP levels.

The comments I've seen posted indicate that this system would accomplish this. In the discussion I had with one vendor, he agreed and suggested that an option was to use a 5" in/out Donaldson that would further reduce back pressure but would increase the noise level. He stated that any 5" system would be louder than I was interested in.

C Schomer's steel wool definitely helped his Walker.

Good luck and keep us posted.

Jay, I would be careful about one of the long mufflers, I thought I would have nailed down a quiet system with the 51" "Silent Partner" but now wonder if the drone trouble is amplified having a large portion of the muffler under the cab rather than back by the bed like the OE muffler is.

Many of those long mufflers are intended for vertical use like my Silent Partner. Not sure what is different but Donaldson is currently working on a horizontal version of the Silent Partner.

I just pulled off the tail pipe and went for a ride as a test just to see if noise was echoing in the big 5" tail pipe and that was not it, in fact the drone was much worse and was very notable even at idle.

Fireman, Scott and now JmcDowell say the straight through diamond eye is quiet while towing…hard to believe looking at the diamond eye compared to the Silent Partner but maybe a lot has to do with it being shorter and not under the cab plus 4” vs 5”

Our local muffler shop says I would like the banks system (they sell it) but I hear that has drone too and one fella said its too loud for his taste while towing.

Anyone care to comment on a Diamond Eye vs Banks on sound level?

Cant comment on the Diamond eye but I am running the full banks system on my 01. Its loud but the noise is coming from my AFE and no silencer ring. The exhaust is sweet sounding to me. As Sradke says, when pulling through tunnels I roll my windows down just to hear it. As a matter of fact we are both pulling through the same tunnels. Banks is very nice but spendy.

are you worried about noise or just the drone???

I have had great experience with both the banks system & the DPP system. both are a little louder but no drone. even under load. what gears do you have?? believe or not, it makes a difference

Hi Tim,

Both but mostly the drone because if that wasn't there I would keep what I have. My gears are 3. 73's with and auto trans and 33" tires. I spend most of the time 1600-1900 rpms. Our windy mountain highways allow for 50-55 mph speeds and when locked up in OD the rpm's are down.

We tow in the same area but also on the flats where 60 in OD also has the rpm's down.

Which did you find more quiet, the Banks or DPP?

Matt: I have the 5" exhaust and I got a 21 or 22" muffler that came with the kit and it had a baffle in it and made a terrible drone like you are describing. I took it off and knocked the baffle out of it and put it up front and a 51" donaldson behind it and it stopped all of the drone even when towing my fifth wheel. I did not notice any increase in power either. Your setup sounds about the same as mine.
