Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) APPS or TPS?

According to the factory service manual for mine it is the apps. Irregardless I am having problems with it big time. Dropping to idle more and more often to the point that today i felt like people watching me go down the road must think I have never driven a stick before. Anyway, stopped and checked the auto parts stores and noone carries it, appears to be a dealer only item. Stopped at the dealer and they want over $400 dollars for the stupid thing. Does anyone on here know a cheaper place to get one. Know where there is a wrecked truck I could pull one off, or know of an alternative fix. All the searches I have done on here come up with ideas people were going to try but no conclusions on what has worked, etc.

There is a dealer locator on the Cumins web site. Cummins prices are much better than Dodge.

Before you spend the money reset the idiotic thing and see what happens then check the output to see if it is really the APPS. Dump your codes in the PCM and see if it is telling you anything. Too often the APPS is blamed for problems from a bad battery, bad connections, electrical noise, and (shudder) a bad VP44. Try some other things before shelling out the ridiculous cost for that critter.

I know it is the APPS I went through everything last spring and got it tracked down to that, I felt that was way too much then so I lived with it because it would only act up occasionally, it has just progressed to the point that I can't tolerate it anymore.

My truck did the dead throttle routine just the other day as well as the engine not going to low idle. The first time this happened I had the APPS replaced under warranty. Now I have to many miles on. The idle problem has been intermittent for over 2 years. I noticed the idle problem initially when the Pacbrake would not engage. I went to the dealer and naturally they could not reproduce the problem and there were no codes.



Is the APPS a DC only item or is this a Cummins part as well. I called the local Dodge dealer and it is $700 Canadian. I called the Cummins distributer and they were not sure what I was talking about. He said I should look for a part #.



Has anyone tried what Scott Bentz suggested in Gary - K7GLD's thread?

I wound up ordering one from these guys Dodge Parts . I had bought some replacement pieces for the dash from them last fall and their prices were pretty reasonable. I wound up getting the APPS for about $185 dollars less than I was quoted locally. Should be getting here the end of next week. They are a dodge dealership, but like I say their prices have always beat anything I could find when it comes to dodge only parts.

Mine did this on new years day... I unplugged the apps and filled the cavity with di-electric grease and put it back together. It has not acted up since.

I have been using the dielectric grease fix for the last several months but just not working anymore.

I just did the same thing that Brian did as well as installing two new Optima Red Tops to replace my OEM originals and cleaning every ground and connection I could find.

I hope this cures my problem! If not, it is good to know that a less expensive apps is available from Dodge Parts.

There's a lot of misconception about "dialectric grease" - it does NOT improve electrical connections, it is NOT an electrical conductor. What it DOES, is provide a weather resistant seal against the elements by sealing connections. So, if there is a poor or missing electrical connection, the use of grease alone will NOT fix or improve it - you still must clean corrosion off dirty connections, and make sure the PHYSICAL connection is good and solid - THEN, the dielectric grease can do it's job...

10-4 Gary... . I used liberal doses of contact cleaner on the connection and THEN some dielectric grease for sealing it.
