Are newer gen trucks with DEF/ regen going to cause problems with short trips?

Considering a new (to me) truck.

No. If anything, the DEF should help make your truck run better and get better mileage than previous 07.5-12 non DEF trucks.

DPF is the question. And whether it expects a hwy drive to regen.

I am unsure about it, but some long time Cummins owners say that daily driving is OK as long as you work it hard occasionally. Owners here may disagree.

One even told me that on the preDEF models (some years) If it wasn't deleted, you could take it out on the hwy and floor it and clean out the DPF by blowing all the particles clear out of the filter and have a puff of black particle smoke come out your exhaust.

Sounds like it wasn't an efficient filter. Lol

I have a persistent CEL that I thought was due to lack of hwy driving and working the truck. But 2000 miles of towing a 3 ton trailer didn't fix it.
It (CEL) doesn't bother me as much as it bothers my wife.

Cummins told us at the 2013 rally that the new engines ('13 up) produce far less soot than the older ones. That plus the DEF should help considerably on longevity.

Lol that guy...........way off,the filter is a very good trap.If you see black it has failed

So far I am impressed with the way the def trucks are behaving as dailey drivers.not a single dpf issue yet (knock on wood) 1500-5500's.

Newsa - what do mean by CEL? I've got a 2015 6.7 and after about 5,300 miles (70% city, 30% highway) the engine was making a growling noise at idle. I drove it on the freeway for about 45 minutes and I haven't heard the sound since...mileage is now at 6,600.

Appreciate your thoughts!

CEL = check engine light.

But I got it turned off. I sort of expect it to return. That growl I suspect is normal. I think its active regen for the DPF.

I've heard that mostly at idle.. Doesn't happen often.

I just traded in my 14 2500 with the CTD. The first 30,000 miles were running unloaded. Absolutely no issues with DEF. Truck used a bit in the beginning and when towing a 15,000b 5er, other then that, no issues what so ever. My wife just got an ECO Diesel, we have 4000 miles on it. Seems to be going through a bit of DEF, but again, I expect it will slow down on usage when it gets settled in.

got 18k miles on mine so far with 90% freeway towing nothing. (yeah, , yeah, I know, why buy a dually if you're not gonna use it). We plan to get a 5er in a year or two so we'll see how it does doing some work. I have noticed a bit of a rough idle when I don't run Power Service. If I fill the tank and add PS, idle smooths right out. unless regen is timing perfectly with my lacking PS. would be interesting....
