JP's are known and held in high esteem in the 3 gun competition lines.
POF is more a "tactical" gun. Good brands include:
Noveske
Centurion arms. (owned by an active duty SEAL)
High caliber sales sells good guns. Former SOF owned.
Ranier arms has a good rep.
MSTN has a good rep.
BCM good stuff.
Barrels:
Noveske (be prepared with lotsa $$$)
Centurion arms(made from M249 spec steel with M247 spec chrome lining they also sell actual mk12 barrels)
High caliber sales (Mk 12 barrels)
Lothar Walther (Superb barrels for about $350~ish)
BCM Good stuff.
Uppers/lowers:
Theyre all about the same as long as theyre within spec. If you prefer a name brand get it. Gunbroker has lowers for $57. 00 right now. That's what I'd get.
I like Magpul grips and stocks.
I prefer a free float forearms. Larue makes nice ones with an excellent rep.
I have one from Centurion and I like it. It's light and strong.
I have dealer accounts with some of the guys mentioned and many more. I'll sell at a substantial discount.
You can build a rifle as good or better with carefully chosen parts. For less $$$.
If youre talking JP and POF youre planning on spending 2K~ish. ?
Some of the barrels I should also mention:
Krieger
Obermeyer (sp?)
Brietlin (sp?)
Hart.
All top shelf names.
You can skimp on the accessories, but do not skimp on the barrel/bolt.
It's the heart of your gun. W/o it being a quality piece, it'll never shoot as good as it could.
That's not to say you wouldnt get a standard $199 DPMS production barrel and be very happy with it. It really depends on what you expect from it, and the users abilities.
My brother is a distinguished shooter in hi power rifle and he absolutely LOVES his DPMS 243 right out of the box. He's actually afraid to work on it... . it shoots that good.
Anyway...
The trigger is next in importance.
Lots of good triggers to choose from with Geiselle (sp?) being about the best.
You can get a pretty nice trigger if you look around for about $145. I believe the Jard is around this price. Gesielle's start about $270 IIRC.
This is also a personal preference. Do you want a single stage? 2 stage? Hunting gun? self defense?
Depends on what's your cup of tea.
Tactical? SHTF? plinker? hunter? truck gun?
Do you want a DI or piston gun?
Sooo many questions... . :-laf
I remember a company who made stuff like that.
Williams trigger specialists IIRC.
Maybe them?
BTW Oly arms is pretty universally known as shyte. Blackthorn too.

I want one that I can just plink around with, defense, etc. Another one for accuracy and long range.
I see on a lot of the sites you've listed, that there are a variety of barrel lengths available.
If you're building your own rifle, what lengths can you use? What ever you can get your hands on?![]()
Patriot, what is your opinion of the Colt and DPM rifles. I am pretty much in the dark as to what is what. I would like to get an AR style rifle but really don't know where to start. bg
