For those hauling horses

Anyone have or have experience with JP Rifles or POF?

Also, I've been reading and talking to people who say it's much cheaper to build your own AR from various parts than it is to buy one.

How much can you save? Quality lost? Same quality?

Recommendations on places to buy parts?

JP's are known and held in high esteem in the 3 gun competition lines.

POF is more a "tactical" gun. Good brands include:

Noveske

Centurion arms. (owned by an active duty SEAL)

High caliber sales sells good guns. Former SOF owned.

Ranier arms has a good rep.

MSTN has a good rep.

BCM good stuff.

Barrels:

Noveske (be prepared with lotsa $$$)

Centurion arms(made from M249 spec steel with M247 spec chrome lining they also sell actual mk12 barrels)

High caliber sales (Mk 12 barrels)

Lothar Walther (Superb barrels for about $350~ish)

BCM Good stuff.

Uppers/lowers:

Theyre all about the same as long as theyre within spec. If you prefer a name brand get it. Gunbroker has lowers for $57. 00 right now. That's what I'd get.

I like Magpul grips and stocks.

I prefer a free float forearms. Larue makes nice ones with an excellent rep.

I have one from Centurion and I like it. It's light and strong.

I have dealer accounts with some of the guys mentioned and many more. I'll sell at a substantial discount. :D

You can build a rifle as good or better with carefully chosen parts. For less $$$.

If youre talking JP and POF youre planning on spending 2K~ish. ?

Thanks!

I may have to take you up on that! :D

Thanks for the info.

Some of the barrels I should also mention:

Krieger

Obermeyer (sp?)

Brietlin (sp?)

Hart.

All top shelf names.

You can skimp on the accessories, but do not skimp on the barrel/bolt.

It's the heart of your gun. W/o it being a quality piece, it'll never shoot as good as it could.

That's not to say you wouldnt get a standard $199 DPMS production barrel and be very happy with it. It really depends on what you expect from it, and the users abilities.

My brother is a distinguished shooter in hi power rifle and he absolutely LOVES his DPMS 243 right out of the box. He's actually afraid to work on it... . it shoots that good.

Anyway...

The trigger is next in importance.

Lots of good triggers to choose from with Geiselle (sp?) being about the best.

You can get a pretty nice trigger if you look around for about $145. I believe the Jard is around this price. Gesielle's start about $270 IIRC.

This is also a personal preference. Do you want a single stage? 2 stage? Hunting gun? self defense?

Depends on what's your cup of tea. :D

Tactical? SHTF? plinker? hunter? truck gun?

Do you want a DI or piston gun?

Sooo many questions... . :-laf

Speaking of a question... . Olympic Arms used to make a set trigger in their pre-ban Ultramatches... any ideas as to who made it? It sets the trigger to 1lb when you move the trigger rearward... . it's awesome for a class gun!!:D

I remember a company who made stuff like that.

Williams trigger specialists IIRC.

Maybe them?

BTW Oly arms is pretty universally known as shyte. Blackthorn too.

:-laf, I can't say as I've never heard that! But the one I've got would literally take the tacks out of the 100yd target. It was only 1:10 twist, so it didn't like much heavier than a 55-60gr bullet, which wasn't a problem for shooting 'yotes, which is the reason I bought it to begin with. It worked great for that until accuracy started to go away, and after cleaning the bore one day, I decided it was time to upgrade barrels. Seems just before the middle of the barrel, there were some "dissapearing" lands for about 6 inches... . It's now the proud bearer of an EGW upper, new Hogue full floating upper, and a 1:7 twist 28" Krieger... . and a Tubb Carrier weight bar. :D It will still shoot the tacks out of a target, but it will do it at 200yds, now... . but the trigger is still in it, as it's a real beauty. Built it for F/TR, but it's not quite good enough over 600yds... . :{

I really was asking about the trigger and where to find another one. I've asked around, and heard it was a Williams, before. I thought that, looking at how it was made, but in this day and age, who knows!?!? Anyway, I'm going to call Williams and see about getting another one, but if you come across one, keep me in mind... .

I want one that I can just plink around with, defense, etc. Another one for accuracy and long range.

I see on a lot of the sites you've listed, that there are a variety of barrel lengths available.

If you're building your own rifle, what lengths can you use? What ever you can get your hands on? :D

Patriot, what is your opinion of the Colt and DPM rifles. I am pretty much in the dark as to what is what. I would like to get an AR style rifle but really don't know where to start. bg

16" is the legal minimum w/o special paperwork. Theyre nice and handy.

20" is about the min for long range/target. If you will be shooting strictly from a bench (not lugging it up & down hills hunting etc) you may want a 24". You can go even longer if you'd like, but 24 is generally the max with an standard AR.

If youre budget minded you can go for a 22lr in 16" for plinking.

Sooo many choices, cant cover it all here.

Colt is a good rifle. Got a following, you will pay extra for the horse on the side though.

DPMS is OK too. Be a fine plinker. I had a national match DPMS upper and it was a fine shooter. On the lower end, but a GOOD rifle for the $$$. BTW same gun as Remington AR's, same owner.

BG, first you have to decide on what you'll be using it for, then the caliber.

You can do some reading here:

There are quite literally thousands on configurations that the AR platform can be made to.

How's that saying go..... "AR's. They're like Barbi, only, they're for men. " (not that my wife doesn't love to shoot hers either!! She's begging me to paint the stocks pink or bright purple... ugh. )

Here's a good trigger setup on my list. Give some thought on barrel twist as heavier rounds are harder to locate unless you are reloading then it won't matter. I like my Oly CAR-15 all the other manufacterers wern't around then like they are now.

American Trigger Corporation

I have to say Patriot knows his stuff. I've been around guns my entire life and taught firearms as a full time instructor for a large LE agency. I've built over a dozen black rifles over the years and my personal opinion is that your upper should have a chrome lined barrel if you plan to do a lot of shooting. If you decide to build your own I would avoid DPMS lower parts kits due to their inferior quality (weaker trigger and hammer springs and oversized roll pins). When building a lower I generally choose a Rock River Arms lower parts kit. They seem to have a decent quality kit and the roll pins fit.

Noveski makes high end quality parts. Some of my more recent builds were around LMT (Lewis Machine and Tool) 14. 5" uppers with pinned flash suppressors bringing the overall lenght to over 16 inches. LMT make mil-spec products and has military contracts. I believe their contracts are with the spec-ops people. LMT doesn't sell complete rifles to the general public, but you can buy the upper and lower separately. If I was to buy a complete rifle I'd buy a Colt, LMT and assemble the two pieces or a Rock River.

JMTC, I believe DPMS is not up to par with a lot of the rifles out there.
