What's to understand.....your employer or the people he (or she) hired to make the vehicle service decisions looks to be the real dumb shyt here.......They won't take a vehicle out of service for an hour or two a month to service it?? That's laughable.....:-laf

actually, they do get the oil changed once in awhile, but it makes more money moving than it does sitting in a shop.. people who aren't in the business but are simply civilian end users really don't understand

typical bean-counting managers who know nothing about the technical aspects of the company or things the company uses.

You got it, What's more if that vehicle is in commercial use and has a crash that involves Injuries or death , you had better have service records. If the lack of info gets into some Attorney Hands it could be used to show negligent maintenance.. that owner/company could be looking at the things it used to own if plaintiff(s) wins. wrongful Death/Injury.

Sounds like the civilians make better decisions than your boss......Buy hey....tell your boss there is an easy solution to finding the hour or two needed to care for his vehicles. He should use the time his employees waste every day on personal stuff.... long lunches, talking/texting their with girlfriends, BS'ing on the side of the road with friends, smoke breaks, online forums......stuff like that.:-laf

well, civilians usually have their diesel truck for personal reasons...then you find some people who really have an emotional connection to their vehicle and might even lavish more attention and devotion to it than is healthy, whereas some businesses might need that truck to move everyday, so losing it for a day to get the transmission oil changed is just a money loser. they might be making so much money that buying a new truck when the transmission craps out is better choice for them than worrying about stuff like differentials or transmissions. they will just buy another truck and move right along without thinking one thing about it. they can write this stuff off on their taxes, you and I can't.

Geez everyone!
Stupid, dumb, halfass....?
Let's just agree there is more than one way to maintain/use our trucks.
Yes, in some eyes I might over maintain my truck...but it helps to know some people have decent luck undermaintaining to. Worst case scenario...I split the difference and I might be ok.
If I can though....I'll stick to the maintenance schedule...
I use the truck primarily for hauling truck camper pulling trailer. 4k in truck and 3 k of trailer.

I'm making a 1700 - 1800 mile trip next Thurs. And will be gone a few weeks.

I check everything on the truck before a trip like this. Make sure everything is secure and all maintenance is up to date.

My girlfriend depends on me to try to not mess up our trip due to neglience.

An unexpected break down on the road might be unavoidable (or might be avoidable).... But either way, it is more expensive than the maintenance. A trouble free vacation is priceless.

most of the roadside breakdowns are for these things. Out of fuel, Battery Dead, electrical issues , flat tire, overheating.

prepare for those and you have most of it covered

Well, I've had an A.C.compressor freeze up and destroy a belt. Totally unavoidable. Water pumps would fall under overheating. Also experienced that. For over heating, really the best preventative is an outside inspection of pump and hoses. Had a transmission fail once. Thankfully I was only 3 miles from home. I was subscribing to your philosophy of "drive it tell it fails" in a front wheel drive Hyundai Excel. Break downs are not fun no matter where you are. I will.maintain my truck that I have an emotional connection to, and that I get a call from the sales dept every time I take it in for a recall. They see how well it is maintained and see the extra things I've installed like the goose neck hitch, rear diff cover, bypass oil filter, aluminum eye on the top radiator hose, suspension enhancement, FAST transmission coolers, etc... And they want to buy it.

Newsa, not telling you not to do whatever it is you normally do, just telling you statistically what happens the most.
big difference LOL it sounds like you had the overhaeting and electrical issues happen to you and as you said, some of them you can't prepare for.

Had 2014 Dually to dealer for 24 MO/30,000 mile service for AS69RC transmission fluid change per the Maintenance Schedule. The Technician said the oil looked good, recommended it be changed at 60,000 miles and documented the same on the service receipt. Happy days; saved me a chunk of change, but nonetheless, left me feeling a little uneasy. Comments?
