Does anyone run the ASA intake system that SAMSRAMS sells? I was wondering how the turbo whine and performance compared to a k&n in the factory swiss cheesed air box or the bhaf set-up? I like the sound of a nice healthy turbo whine. Also, would the ASA intake allow water to enter the turbo during a hard rain?

... I run one... ;)

I might as well respond to this since I produce them, and there are some tech questions that I can answer. Pastor Bob - please put me at the top of the hp penalties list if a beatin' is needed!

Okay - I'm still running the prototype, and the production ones are nearly identical, just nicer. The feedback I've received is that literally everyone loves the turbo whine, and so do the people driving beside you :-laf It is very noticable but not annoying - I had one bud say that it sounded like the turbo was going to come right up through the hood... I laughed a lot and then agreed he was right. Essentially the sound resonates right through the steel Intake and out the filter. Personally, I love it.

BHAF: The Big Honkin' Air Filters will bolt right onto the Intakes, and I'm happy to sell the kits sans filters for that reason - there are a lot of 1st genners that already have the BHAF's. In fact one of the first ones that went out was for that application and he sent pics back after the install. I hadn't seen the BHAF installed on anything, but the BHAF nickname is spot on - sucker is huge.

* Edit - A recent customer noticed the AFE filters seem to have a slippery rubber lip where the filter clamps onto the Intake - this made for a difficult seal to be made and required some additional effort (and another set of hands) to keep the filter on the Intake while tightening, and there was a tendancy for the AFE to slip off the end of the Intake during tightening. After a good seal was made there was no issue, it just took some additional effort to hold the filter in place - just FYI.

I am looking at a few ways to prevent any slipping issues in the future but the fix, though not essential for functionality, may take a while to incorporate.

Performance: I sent one of the very early Intakes to PDR and NASCAR Mark dyno tested it for me, and for that I am very grateful. After installing it on one of their big-horse rigs he discovered that while they do not make any appreciable hp gains on the top end they do extend the hp and tq curve down, meaning the power comes on sooner and lasts longer. This was particularly good for me as most of my driving involves towing. Dyno testing was the only way to know - thanks Mark. I think the kits even fit the twin applications with some minor adjusting, but I'd have to verify that with Mark. Heck, I'll know myself in a few months... :-laf

As well, the egt's seem to be at the very least no higher. It seems that while the rig is driving and air is rushing through the engine bay the egt's will be slightly lower, however while stationary they seem to be about the same as the factory unit.

Rain: The question about rain has come up many times, and so far as we (customers and I) can tell there isn't any risk of direct rain entering the filter, even when stationary, at least no more than the factory version with the lower front inlet. However, I am looking at producing a very simple bolt on shield that will cover the upper side of the filter right where the hood and fender meet, just in case. I'm looking at that pretty hard because it sure can't hurt. I'm working on a website, and all of the prices, detailed pictures, and installation instructions, etc will be there. But for now we need to keep all of that on the PM side of the TDR, or by phone. Please feel free to drop a PM my way, and I'd be happy to give out the numbers and other specifics.

Many thanks all,

- Sam

Same ones - I believe they list them as a First Gen Cold Air Intake - PDR is very kind enough to market them for me.
