Ok. .

With today being a nice day outside and finally having a chance to catch up on some service work I noticed I am having issues with the temp coating on my ATS Exhaust Manifold. This manifold was installed last July when I had all my motor work done while at EEP and when you look at it today less than a year later the temp coating has began to crack and it is also begining to rust.

After chatting around to some of my club members this is not a isolated incident and I even had that confirmed by a couple of reputable shops which said all they do when they, the exhaust manifolds, get like that all they do is spray them with high temp heat paint. Well,I did not make the ATS choice for coating failure and in fact that was the one reason I did have EEP do the install as I had already at home a HTT manifold for the job. The ATS was used for their coating being a factory done deal and that coupled with its toughness made my choice. With that being said, less than a year later and the coating is failing does not sit well with me.

I have emailed ATS and as of this post there has been zero response to it. To say I am upset is a understatement as show season is almost here and my truck spends a ton of time with the hood up and rusty manifolds are not what I want to be seen. Hopefully ATS responds and can provide a answer to why or if they have a coating problem.

My question to all of the membership here is this...

What shape is your ATS manifolds coating in now and how long have you had it installed?. I am curious to see how widespread this issue really is... Thanks Andy

Just installed mine about 3 months ago and the coating is almost all gone and starting to rust also. But I could care less what it looks like I bought it for what it does. ;)

The coating isn't very good considering if you spray it with some brake parts cleaner it washes right off.

P. S. mine hasn't rusted (going on 2 years) but it's turned a nice blue\gold color. Who says high EGT's are bad?:-laf

They would be better off not even mentioning the coating in there adds etc etc. Mine wiped right off with my finger, like dust, Within 3 months the thing was solid rust and I dont live in wet conditions. SOcal. Anyway I like the improvement of the piece but like I said dont tell us it has a special heat treated coating.

The best coating Iv'e come across

hpcoatings

There is three differant types

1. Hypercoat 1300 Degs. comes in a shiny Silver

2. hypercoat 1600 Degs. Comes in Blue, Red or Green

3. Extreme Coat 2500 Degs. comes in Black or Gray

the two Hypercoats are a Ceramic aluminum mix,

and the Extreme is a full ceramic coating

How easy was the install? Was it the 3 piece?

The install on mine was pretty easy. The one I got directly from ATS was a 3-piece, but came assembled. It bolted right on without any problems. I can't speak much for the coating because I've only had mine on for about a month.

Seems like one of the more durable manifold coatings is the cheap flat-black stove paint you buy in a rattle can.

I understand that Vaughn, but,I did not buy mine to have to keep spraying gas grill paint on it to keep it nice. IF they promote a coated manifold they should at least use a coating which is not sub-standard material. The product(the three piece manifold) they make speaks for itself but why they would use a poor coating is beyond me.

It has been over a week and no reply from ATS or Mr. Cannon on their poor coatings. To say I am upset is a meare understatement. Myself,I am not one who can spare downtime to have a manifold sent out and recoated becuase ATS didn't provide what they claimed from the beginning... ... .

"ATS Multi-Piece Pulse Manifolds for the Dodge Cummins application have pulse exhaust flow design, helping to spool up the turbocharger sooner with less exhaust backpressure and increase fuel efficiency. This pulse manifold design eliminates the problems with shrinking and breaking, as well as cracking and gasket issues.

All Manifolds come Pre-Assembled with Black High Temperature Coating and Pre-Tapped for Pyrometer Probe.

ATS Exhaust Manifolds are available for the new Common Rail Cummins as well as both the 12 and 24 Valve Cummins. When looking for a performance exhaust manifold go with the leader, ATS is the original designer/manufacturer holding the patent on the ball flange construction, beware of other cheap copies being produced in other countries.

For racing enthusiasts, ATS offers an Extra Wide Racing Flange for all 12 and 24 Valve Cummins manufactured from 1994-2002. "

Taken right from their website the above material,Take note of the comment about the high temp coating. I have had other coated exhaust parts and used them in much harsher conditions and had no issues with coatings failing. With the way our membership here uses their trucks one would not expect to have their coatings failing.

It certainly would be nice to hear from someone at ATS on this but I guess with just the couple of members here who have added their comments about their poor coating quality and its failure,we are all just small fish in the big pond and they only cared about getting our money up front and not deal with us later..... Andy

P. S. -Michael. . I appreciate the HPC coatings info, but, when you purchase a product that says its already been prepped with a coating one should not have to have the parts done a second time.

on edit... .

I have included a small shot of how mine has rusted and the coating disappeared in less than 7 months.

That looks good compared to mine, at least you got some black left, just kidding. I agree with you, you pay big bucks for rust. For some of us that buy performance parts, we are the ones that open our hoods to show off what we have done to improve our trucks, or are do it yourselfers and enjoy the mods and working on our vehicles. Coating like this is something you sell someone that will never look under there hood.

HEY JEB CHECK OUT MY NEW MANIFOLD, WOW CLEM, LOOKS GREAT DID YOU PAY EXTRA FOR THAT RUST. YEP. GIT-R-DONE.

that sucks andy, course it looks a ton better than mine after plowing snow this winter. i also emailed and had to call multiple times to get a hold of ats about a crack in an ats manifold that i purchased. they said the crack is prefectly normal, but once you get 2 cracks you should replace it.

My HT manifold still looked great after 1 1/2 years until I changed my engine after a 53 block cracked. The mechanic sprayed it with brake cleaner to get the oil off... . now I have a spotted manifold.

Man, I'd be irritated, too, if I paid for the coating and it rusted like that. But, since they started "coating" their manifolds, has the price increased accordingly? If not, you get what you pay for.

Anyone else had an ATS manifold crack? If so, that may steer me to another 3-piece setup when the time comes.

Daniel

this is what my ats manifold looks like, i sent these pics to andy as well, ive only had it on the truck for less than 2 years, and it looks like this, im a little po'ed too, the main reason i went with ats at the time, is because they offered the manifold assembled and coated for less than what HTT wanted, and theirs was not coated. if i had know that this manifold would do this, i would probably bought the HTT manifold and have that coated.
