7 Way Connection Observations

Dodge Ram 2500 pulls an 18 wheeler out of the ditch

If you want tandem, 12ft is about the shortest I've seen. Never seen any sold without ST tires. Options are plentiful, drop ramp, ramps stored under rear.

I know there's lots of folks who double tow, good on ya and rots of ruck. I towed my golf cart ONCE behind my 39ft DRV and did $2K damage turning too tight. No more for me.

Anyhoo, I believe in your comments you've actually described the trailer you want. Only thing not mentioned that I highly recommend is get an extra long tongue, might prevent my problem.

Cheers, Ron

Even at 2200 pounds I think you would appreciate brakes. My boat with a single axle trailer comes in around 2200 pounds and doesn't have any brakes. If I had had a choice when I bought it I would have got them.

I think it would be far easier to add a brake controller for the 2nd trailer than adding hydraulic brakes. Thou I'm not sure where to mount the 2nd controller.

The fifth pin on a flat connector is for reverse lights. A hydraulic coupler has a lock-out (which is sometimes manual) so that you can back the trailer up. The electric lock-outs are tied to the reverse lights.

Okay thanks, I was not aware of the electric type, just the lock pin. I don't care for the system at all.

Dang this thread! Now it's got me thinking about double towing again.

Here's my setup, with 1700lb (I think) stabilizer jacks.

Anyone heard of GR trailers? A friend just got a good deal on one for his SXS. I don't know much about them.

Most trailer manufactures that use Dexter axles will plaster that fact all over their website. I notice there is no mention of this on GR's site. On a light duty trailer it might not matter but.....

The only advice I would give is stick to your guns with getting a tandem. I pull my 4 seat RZR behind my 33 ft 5th wheel on a single axle trailer.....there are times when it gets a little......errr, spirited?
Granted, with a shorter 5th wheel and potentially lighter load, you'd likely be better off than I am with a single axle.

I have not found it necessary to have brakes on the second trailer.

Idaho requires them on any trailer with an unloaded weight of 1,500 lbs or more.

So they will not be required on the trailer I get, but I am going to get them on 1 axle for when I'm towing it solo.

So the local PJ dealer has one 6x14 still in stock.

Is it worth 2' longer for the narrower deck?

I think the narrower trailer will track better as a 2nd trailer.

They are offering it for $3500, which includes 6 lug hubs, 2 spares, and 225/75R15. I still need to see if I want to get the spares thru them or just get some LT tires on my own. As spares I'm sure the ST are fine.

As spares I'm sure the ST are fine.

No sense in carrying around useless dead weight. Nothing like the trailer repair shop calling because one's trailer is in the shop for warranty repair and the ST spare tire goes "BOOM!!!" from separating while on the spare tire carrier. No damage other than new underwear needed from those working in the area at the time.

We had already gone through the 5 OEM tires that joined the roof high defective Hi-Run tire stack at the cargo trailer dealer. Took 6 months to get warranty reimbursement. The one that blew was another brand that we were having some luck getting 15K mile tread life out of.

You would be looking at a possible six total defective ST tires.

Just saying you know there is better out there so ask for a "you keep the ST spares" discount.

I have read your ideas for a second ATV trailer to tow behind your 5er. I have a 26' 5er and have towed a 20' IO boat on a tandem axle trailer behind the 5er for many years without any issues. Boat trailer does have surge brakes, which had been adequate. I don't know how long your 5er is but they tow double great if set up right. I've towed my setup on all types of roads without problems. You may have to build a tandem ATV trailer to your specs.

Bringing this one back. As much as I wanted a tandem axle trailer I simply couldn’t justify the added cost for what I will be using it for. Nearly 2X the cost, and it’s just for ATV’s.

So I got a new BigTex 35SA in 14’. Single 3500lb Dexter axle, and plenty of deck space to fit everything I want and load for proper tongue weight. 1180lbs empty with the spare, easy to double tow.

I also got it cheaper than many used trailers are listed for, stuff was a premium this fall due to lack of availability.
