A good friend of mine has an '02 CTD with an auto in it. He bought it a few years ago knowing that it would need transmission work. He paid for the transmission work, had some troubles and got it sorted out. Everything was running fine. This week he was doing chores and found a trail of leaking ATF. The cooler line from the trans to the heat exchanger was leaking. He bought a new one from the dealer, installed it and a day or two later it started leaking. Got another one, and it failed like the first, except this time, he was traveling and the truck quit moving before he figured out something was wrong. Now he's upset. The truck only has about 90,000 miles on it. The lines are failing where the shoulder for the flair is being bent. I've not seen it, but a good mechanic friend has looked at the failed lines, and reports its not from overtightening, or a bind. They are actually cracking inside of where the nut compresses the line. He had a custome line made, filled it with oil and the trans is not working well, probably is junk again.
The dealer states that the motor mounts must be shot, or the trans mouts are shot, allowing too much flex tearing up the line. The line does not touch the frame, exhaust or transmission. Is there a pressure spike he needs to check for, or anything else? I'm thinking he should press the dealer he got the line from, but I don't think he will get much from them. Any ideas?
