If I am on a slight incline or flat, I can feather the throttle, get it into second and then from there it is not problem from that point. Any significant incline and I am stuck in first.

does 2nd work, going downhill downshift and see if second is working. When mine messed up it was the pin stop for the band(band works 2nd)

Joe,

When was the last time you adjusted the bands? They're supposed to be adjusted every 30,000 miles under normal conditions or 15,000 miles when towing.

A loose front band will cause exactly the symptoms you describe. You should get it looked at and repaired as soon as possible. If caught in time, it's a relatively simple repair. If you let it go on, damage to the front band can result in more expensive repairs.

Please let us know what you find out.

Good luck,

John L.

Hi John,

I put about 25k a year on the truck, so I get the transmission serviced every summer. They pull the pan, replace the fluid, filter and adjust the bands. So I have around 5 months on the last service.

I will take it in as soon as I get back to Spokane.

Thanks for the input.

Joe

Joe,

it's good to hear that you've kept up on the transmission service. So many forget that.

The front band strut has probably broken, bent, and / or fallen out. It occasionally happens. If that's all it is, it's simple to repair.

Drive safe,

John L.

Final outcome. transmission pump was leaking, metal shavings throughout system, bands scorched, so I have been running a little hot. Complete rebuild underway and replacing the Torque Convertor as well. I think I will put on the deeper pan and a transmission temp gage after this.
