It took me almost 3 gallons for front and rear on my 96 with the dana 80 rear. It should be above 2 gallons but less than 3 for the pair.

Wow. That seems like a lot. Thats 12 quarts of gear oil. The Dana 60 and Dana 70 on my 1968 M725 only took 3 quarts per axle. Am I missing something?

My Dana 70 rear diff. took 5qts. of Amsoil 75-90 with the Mag-Hytec cover. Don't know yet about the front... . I'm waiting for Roy to PLEASE start production for a front cover. Truck has 6K miles. I think the stock cover will not require 5 qts. , but I'm not positive.

Just did my Dana 80 on a 4X4, 5 quarts, and I think the front is just over 3 quarts. I would have 9 quarts on hand to be safe.

John,

What is the min and the max fill lines for Dana 80 axle? Does it hurt if you overfill?

I usually try to fill my pumpkin with the rear end on an incline.

On the dipstick that comes with the Mag-Hytec cover there are two lines, probably about . 50 to . 75 inches apart. The bottom line is the minimum fill line and corresponds with the bottom of the axle tube. The top line is the max fill line and is probably the bottom of the axle shaft itself. The instructions that come with the cover instruct you to fill the differential to a level that falls between these two lines, with the minimum being the bottom line. If any of you have a Mag-Hytec and the fluid does not register above that bottom line, I would add it until you get to that line, assuming your truck is level.

I just filled it `till it started running out the fill hole (stock cover level concrete floor). I also spilled some too, and didnt get the bottles completly empty.

Just finished the axles. The rear Dana 70, with limited slip, took 3 quarts of Mobile one and 4 onces of limited slip lube. That filled it to the plug hole on level ground. The front Dana 60 took 3 3/4 quarts to fill to overflowing. I wonder if the TRAC LOC unit, due to its size, reduces the amount of space in the third member and gear oil the stock cover will hold? I have heard from 4 quarts to 7 quarts to fill a Dana 70 from TDR members replying.

Also, I cured the front axle gear oil leaking from the vent hose. I put an axle vent tube from a 1981 CJ in the upper part of the cover. Drilled a hole in the cover and brazed the fitting in. I then rerouted the vent hose to the driver side of the vehicle. I used an 1/8" pipe plug to plug the original hose fitting hole on the axle housing. This should stop the front axle from pucking gear oil from the vent hose. I did a survey and most TDR members said they had the same problem.
