I hope this isn't considered a drivetrain type question... but since it applies to both 12v and 24v trucks, this seemed like a good place.

What are the weight ratings of the axles in our trucks? Mine is the Dana 80 hybrid (based on the sticker under the hood), despite it being an automatic.

I weighed my setup on Friday -- truck, Lance camper, and car on car trailer. Total weight was 17,320 lbs. Weight on the axles was 38xx front, 81xx rear, and 53xx on the trailer. I want to be sure I'm not overdoing it.

Rob - I think the door sticker has the Gross Axle Rating listed and if the memory is working my 2500 4x4 has a 4600# front and 6900# rear. The 3500 should be about the same on the front but I would hope it was higher on the rear. Not sure about the diff between 4x2 and 4x4.

Rob I believe the axle on a dually is a 7500# axle. regards Pete

You're right about the door jamb sticker... says 7500 lbs. with the 215/85-16 "D" tires @ 60 psi. Now... does that mean the axle can take more with better tires? Mine are "F" rated (the 19. 5's). Also, I checked one of my old tires and in dual form at 66 psi max, it says they'll do 2150 lbs. each (8600 total). Very interesting.

Otherwise... what's another axle I can get with a higher rating? Ugh.

Rob

Well I just had to go out with the flashlight and look at my 215/85R16's on my truck,Single-- 2470 @80 lbs X 4 = 9880 lbs .

Looks like a little under rating's goin' on around here.

I think we all know there is considerable A$$ covering built in on weight ratings to protect corporate America from the likes of most of us that hang around here. #ad

It would be cool to know what the engineered capacity of the big D-80 really is!

Any one know??

Mike:

Remember, I have a 3500. So my x4 was for the rear only. Add all six D ratings up for a 3500 and you get 13540#.

I do wonder what the actual D80/70 hybrid weight capacity is. I suppose I'll find out. #ad

I kinda figure the factory underrates everything by 10-20% to account for people like us. That being the case, I'm still under given a 10% margin.

Rob

Does anyone know the legalities for exceeding the GVR as shown on the sticker of the door sill? I've heard that this is checked in Canada.

The hybrid Dana 80 carries a rating of 7500lbs. The true Dana 80 carries a rating of 8250lbs... CJ

RobG,
I also have the 3500,check my signature,I thought we were just talking rear axle ratings here. The stork brought my truck with Michelin load range "E" 215/85R16's so if I add 'em all up,Front 2680lbs @ 80 psi X 2 and 2470lbs @ 80 psi X 4 for the rear =15,240lbs maximum available tire load capacity. #ad
: Overkill??? maybe, but I think DC is just covering their corporate butt.
It would be cool if someone here knew someone who had carnal knowlage of the real engineering poop on the magnificent Dana 80.
