Cheap fix to try is putting in a noise filter I put one on mine and problem solved. Dodge Ram Cummins 24V Truck Converter Clutch Cycling Repair. there is a link in this thread that will get you to where you can purchase the $13. 00 noise filter. Try it it is the cheapest thing you can throw on and I will almost guarantee it will fix your problem. What you have is a hunting problem. Mine would get so violent you would swear the truck was going just quit. It was about a 200 - 300 rpm surge constantly. The only time it would go away is to get totally out of lockup by slowing down and going into second.

My dad's 02 is once again experiencing surging / bucking after the truck goes into overdrive while driving normally with no load. The truck isn't showing any codes, has a new VP44 and has a new output shaft speed sensor. It also has a fairly new fuel filter. He doesn't notice this at any other time. Any ideas?

I had similar issues off and on until I got a smarty. Have not had a single issue since. I think the stock programing is glitchy.

Black Sheep does not buck until the temps go south of 55 degrees. Something in the flippin' fueling software I am convinced. Does this with/without Smarty. TST is not hooked up. There have been guys who installed a resistor in the IAT wires that eliminated this problem. One guy even installed a rheostat so he could adjust on the fly. Do a search.

I wonder if a faulty the transmission temp sensor could be playing a roll in some of these problems? Note the suspiciously similar temperature to where your problems begin to occur in the first line under the "Operation" section below.

From the 2001 Dodge service manual:

TRANSMISSION TEMPERATURE SENSOR

DESCRIPTION

Transmission fluid temperature readings are supplied to the transmission control module by the thermistor. The temperature readings are used to control engagement of the fourth gear overdrive clutch, the converter clutch, and governor pressure. Normal resistance value for the thermistor at room temperature is approximately 1000 ohms.

The thermistor is part of the governor pressure sensor assembly and is immersed in transmission fluid at all times.

OPERATION

The PCM prevents engagement of the converter clutch and overdrive clutch, when fluid temperature is below approximately 10°C (50°F).

If fluid temperature exceeds 126°C (260°F), the PCM causes a 4-3 downshift and engage the con- verter clutch. Engagement is according to the third gear converter clutch engagement schedule.

The overdrive OFF lamp in the instrument panel illuminates when the shift back to third occurs. The transmission will not allow fourth gear operation until fluid temperature decreases to approximately 110°C (230°F).

i will try

I will try various idea's I have. And get back with ya'll. I think it has to do with timing and or fueling/timing. I just don't think it's in the transmission. I had the hunting problem, installed the filter and works flawlessly now. At least I don't think it has anything to do with TC lockup or unlocking. Because the RPM swing is not there. The truck just does not like maintaning speed it loves to accelerate and deccelerate.

Thanks Kent. What software level do you run? Also, this would be the Smarty S03 correct?

It does not matter what the smarty is on at all, any setting is smooth. and it is an so3 with the revo download. I think that is what it is called... the upgrade that gives you more adjustability.

JLandry,

I appreciate the great lengths you go to in an effort to assist fellow TDR members! Unfortunately in this case my truck is a manual transmission. Hopefully the info will help someone else!

surging and bucking again

Find the orange wire from the PCM and measure the voltage from it, it should be at or less then 5 VDC you will probably find that it is highter then that. There is a resistor wattage size that stops this problem if this is it???
