It's so nice to be out of the humidity!
Got back this morning about 4 hours ago. I went with Pioneer Centres BMW where I work part time. The owner and CEO decided to throw us a party this year, like 8 others the past 8 years, but this is my first.
They flew the employees (about 150) and 150 spouses, from the BMW of Denver, the two Land Rover dealers here, Land Rover San Diego and Porsche San Diego, all the way to San Antonio and put us up in the Westin Riverwalk Hotel for two nights.
We left Friday from Denver International around 9 am on one of Continental's 737-800s with a stopover in Houston, and on to San Antonio in a 737-500. I love flying by the way.
We arrived, checked in to the hotel, which was sweet by the way, and hung out. The only thing we needed to "do" work related, was go to the formal dinner and cocktail party, with the employee recognition ceremonies and some fun with a comedian/entertainer. This was on Saturday evening. All the other time until Sunday morning was reserved for whatever we wanted to do.
The riverwalk is beautiful. Lots of shops, hotels, restaurants, all along a natural, yet modified, section of the San Antonio River, curving its way through downtown. The mall is pretty cool too. Yeah, it's a mall, but the way they designed the mall around the river was the reason for going. Saturday morning we went to Ripley's Haunted Adventure and the Alamo (of course). Both were very cool. The Alamo was not what I expected. First, it is in the middle of modern buildings and roads, has very manicured landscapes, and more buildings are part of the fort than I imagined. But, it was neat and gave me new respect for what Bowie, Crockett, and others went through.
We also took a riverboat tour along the river. That was entertaining but crowded and too short. Unfortunately for me, I am not much into Mexican food, but I managed!
Sunday was our day to leave, around 11:30 am. Continental overbooked the flight, so we (Mack and I, and a BMW salesman and his wife) volunteered to be put on the first United flight out of the airport at 6:25 am, be put in a hotel for free for the night, some money for Applebees, and a $300 travel voucher each. Hey, I didn't care! So, the four of us hung out, went to dinner, went shopping at the cool Quarry Market which is an outdoor mall, but used to be a concrete plant/quarry. We watched "Derailed" at the theater and headed back to the hotel.
This morning we took United's nonstop flight to Denver on a Canadair Regional Jet 700. Mack and I sat in the port side over-wing emergency exit row and had to help with the emergency door if needed. The flight attendant instructed us with what to do but as we were pushed back, the little plastic door holding the door release handle came loose. The little velcro tab kept popping off. I pushed the adhesive back on the wall and the flight attendant snapped at me for touching the door without her saying so, though she saw what happened and gave me a big smile to let me know she was kidding. She also said if the need for the emergency exit doors arises she would charge the credit card of the man behind me for the doors. He didn't laugh.
Anyway, the RJ was fun, as were the 737s. Now I can use the vouchers to fly to Seattle like Mack and I have always planned to do.
This was my first time to Texas. Very cool and I hope to go back sometime.
