Ted,

That is exactly how my lights were mounted. In fact they are the same lights except I got the halogen version for $19. 00.

I had a similar set up my previous truck and have been happy with that set up on my current set-up.

It is certainly a lot better than the candles that DC supplies.

You're both right. There isn't much coming out of the OEM lights. I put a set of Hella 430s back there and wired it to a separate switch. I put the switch in the bolster underneath the trans lever, close to my hand when I move it into Reverse.

I went a little different route...

I wish it only cost $19. . But I think the the new bumper looks cool.

backup lights

Ted, how'd you wire yours?I'm thinkin' of gettin' a set for mine. It would help when hooking up the TT and just more light back there in general.

I went the easy wire route!

I came straight off the battery to a switch that I mounted on my steering column, then to the lights. I don't mind turning them on manually in reverse and the light on the switch helps to ensure I turn them off. Also helps when I need extra lighting behind the truck without putting the keys in the ign.

The back-up lights are one thing that is necessary. I welded two 2x2 angle on the side of the hitch and mounted the lights on it.

The switch is mounted on the dash cover below the radio. I wired mine through a 30 amp relay. Just in case. I was going to put a pair on the wifes 98, but she said no way. That's funny. I installed her's last week. Guess what? She said, "I love those little lights. They lights every thing up".

I also like being able to turn on the light for any reason, like my fuel tank at nite at home. You'll like um.

Phil,

The wiring is very easy. The setup I have now is temporary but is finish quality. i have run a wire from the fire wall to the back "Y"d it at the back of the spare tire with a wire going to each light. The wire goes through the firewall to a relay. I powered the relay from a D-box that was installed with my stereo. The switch that is running the lights is installed in between the map lights in the over head console shown in this picture. I will be rewiring the switch set up in the near furture. Four more swtiches are going in the garage door compartment lid. They will control two sets of light being installed on the front, the back up lights and one hard wired to my winch. The existing switch will be the master kill for the lights. I will also be using a DPDT swtich for the back up lights so it can be turned on manually, by the oem back up lights or off entirely.

I ordered a set of Piaa 80 xt's and 1500 ion crystal fogs today from off road warehouse through the Group purchase the Bob Wagner set up. Prices are very good. I also got Bilsteins for the truck:D :D :D :D Big day for the VISA card.

As for the white stuff I can ship you some if that is what you are missing in life. ;) We also have mountains if you need some of those down in FLA. :D

Tractor lights

Ted,

I went to Tractor Supply Co. on my way to work today and picked up a set of the 55 watt halogen rectangular flood type. Will probably do the install this weekend. Looking forward to some time off from work :D . Thanks again for the tips. I'll wire mine into the Painless wiring constant hot wire with some kind of a toggle or rocker switch under the dash.

Phil

Hey there's an easier way

There is a 12v hot wire already run back to your trailer plug that is doing nothing unless your plugged into a trailer with a battery or something, it even has its own fuse 30a I think. You can rig it all at the back. There is also a reverse light wire in the trailer plug that you can use to trip a relay to power the lights. I also ran a wire from my switch panel in the cab to this relay so I can turn them on any time. Great for dimming those bright lights following you:D :D

I beleive that people have pulled power of the accessory circut in the trailer harness. You could have the whole thing set up in the back with a relay and switched only by the oem backup lights. I want the relay up front and the option of switching it by both the reverse circut or a manual switch.

Ted

I have the Hella 90601 work lights for back up lights. Each light has two 55 watt bulbs in it. Put it in reverse and the whole world lights up.

I put a relay behind the left rear lights used the aux power wire for my powerbehind me. I also have a marine push-pull switch under the tail gate to turn on the back up lights when I want to light an area behind the truck.

Ditto on the Hella 90601's—they put out some serious light in addition to having robust, rustproof construction. The following thread has lots of add-on backup light information as well as pictures of DonS's Hella 90601's:

Decent Backup Lights

Hey Ted, those are the lights I purchased for my backup lights... they work great and look awesome!

I went the full automatic route for activation. I have two relays that control backup light activation (in series)... the backup lights will only illuminate if in reverse and the parking (or parking/headlights) are on.:cool: As I already had a 10 ga. wire to the back of my Ram for another accessory (interior light in my canopy :D ), and the backup light circuit was close at hand the wiring was simplified... somewhat. Adding a project box and both relays in series and mounting same in a protected area was enough of a challenge. Additionally, I fabricated mud flaps for my PIAA 1500XTs so there is no water intrusion however, the area is open enough so there is no internal condensation. And the best part... the protective measures can't be seen unless you are really looking for them.

Back-Up Lights

Great looking set-up. Terrific info, too.

Has anybodly tried the light set-up Genos sells? They look sharp, but was wondering how effective they are. I think they wrap around the hitch and look like they are part of the bumper.

John,

i am pretty stoked to get the new toys in hand. Both sets of lights are going on the front. The 80s are going on the tabs on the DOR bumper and the 1500s are going to be mounted to the front cross member, exactly how will be determined when I see the lights. The tractor lights are perfect for the rear and the price is perfect. Sounds like you have the wiring dialed in for your set up. Very nice:D

Hey John,

Could you please give more detail

as to how to go about hooking up the relays as you did.

I would love to do that, but I am a little

Dumb when it comes to relays and wiring.

Thanks,

Robbie
