Relays in series

I went the full automatic route for activation. I have two relays that control backup light activation (in series)... the backup lights will only illuminate if in reverse and the parking (or parking/headlights) are on.:cool: As I already had a 10 ga. wire to the back of my Ram for another accessory (interior light in my canopy :D ), and the backup light circuit was close at hand the wiring was simplified... somewhat.

Hey John,

Could you please give more detail

as to how to go about hooking up the relays as you did.

I would love to do that, but I am a little

Dumb when it comes to relays and wiring.

Thanks,

Robbie

Here's what I found at Advance Auto Parts

These lights (I don't recall the manufacturer) are made to fit the factory

trailer hitch, well made, VERY bright and

easy to install. Here are some pics:

Wish I could find the receipt. . next time I'm at Advance I'll note the brand and

price and post it here.

*DING DING we have a Winnah!!

Yes Bill, they're Pilot Navigators. I was just

about to edit my post to show that. Today I went

by the auto parts store where I got them and made

a note of the brand but you beat me to it! :D

I have a pair of aircraft landing lights under the rear bumper.

Theyre good for backing up in a dark spot, and when someone behind you decides to beam you.

I could see their face at 100' in my rearview at night!!

Guess they have some entertainment value too come to think of it. :-laf

Haven't really looked at them real close, may try to install them tomorrow. Any troubles Chris? Where did you splice them in?

I tapped the power wire for the backup light bulb

on the passenger side. The wire is purple and may

have a black stripe. It's the only purple wire

going thru a harness up to the area of the tail

light assembly. Also, you will have to find a

place to attach the ground wire. I used one of the

screws that holds the black plastic license plate

bezel onto the truck. One of these days I'm

going to put a switch in the cab, maybe on the

steering column or the shifter boot plastic

surround, so I can turn them on when I need to

hitch up a trailer at night. Shouldn't be too

difficult, just have to tap into the wire that

is at the transmission backup light switch.

In case these things are made with cheap chinese

pot metal, I used white lithium grease on all the

screws/bolts/nuts to prevent rust. I'm sure the

Indiana DOT uses lots of salt in the winter so

you might do the same! :D

Nice job, Ted. I have very similar utility lights mounted in the same fashion, work great !

I was talking with fellow member EShaw the other night and looking over his rig. He built a beautiful housing for a single Hella work lamp that he attached directly under his hitch receiver, maybe we can get him to post a pic. I can tell ya, it's a real nice, clean install  .
