Is there an easy way to adjust the back-up light switch on a '99 auto transmission? My back up lights will only come on when I hold the shift lever between park and reverse. In the normal reverse shift lever position, the lights will not work.

Where is the switch located to activate the lights? On the steering column or at the transmission?

Thanks!

It is screwed into the drivers side of the trasnsmission. The switch is not adjustable..... maybe your linkage has some slack in it? I have seen the rail that operates the switch inside the transmission get damaged on some older 727s. It also serves as the neutral/park switch, do you have to jiggle the gearshift to start the truck? bg

BG,

The truck starts normally in both park and neutral positions. As mentioned, my back-up lights will work if the shift lever is moved slightly toward the park position, but I have to hold the shifter between park and reverse for the lights to work.

From your reply, would replacing the switch on the rear of the transmission fix my problem?

The center terminal on the switch is the neutral/park part of the switch and the two outer terminals are for the backup light circuit. With trans. in neutral or park you should read continuity from the center terminal to trans. case. With trans. in reverse there should be continuity between the two outer terminals. You might want to check and make sure the switch is tight in the trans. case. It just has a ball plunger on the inside and evidently it has to be depressed further in reverse position to activate the backup lights. It is located just to the rear of where the shifter shaft enters the trans. case. bg

Thanks BG. I'll check continuity tomorrow along with the tightness of switch into the transmission case. I don't believe that is the problem, however, for I haven't noticed and fluid on the floor. Will advise later.

Thanks again.

mine did the same thing, so i bought a set of backup lights from autozone and problem solved, no more holding the level up while trying to back up, just flip a switch and let there be light
