Mickey Thompson Baja Boss Tire Review

Drag link weld question (sorry!)

I have a 2012 3500 dually , with blown head gasket, they found 2 cracked pistons also .. the diesel shop says needs new jasper motor… truck had 111000 miles on it,. It has lost all emissions.. should I have them put new engine in it or sell as is and get a newer truck???

Yes it surprised me when then recommended a rebuilt jasper engine.. they thought it got to hot cause of the tuner got it too hot , but I keep in on tow tune..iam thinking new head gasket and new pistons and rings

Thanks for the info on jasper ,, I contacted the shop again about just doing the head gasket and new pistons and rings, They have to talk to the owner of the shop.. we will see what they say now, come Monday.. they replaced the head gasket about two years ago at 102,300 miles now I have around 111,000 miles on it..

If it were my truck, I'd build it up. I'd use some of the folks in the "referrals" section of the TDR magazine to reach out to. Build a better mouse trap as it's said.

If I still had my 2002 (darn it!), it would've been insane right now. But oh well.

one other thought.. main reason the repair guys suggesed a replacement engine instead of repair is its alot easier to swap an engine than it is to repair it in frame, as well as not tying up the shop or maybe not having employees with the skill set to do an in frame repair.. and warrantying the job. alot less to go wrong on their end as well as if the customer decides not to pay the bill, they end up with a truck they can sell that has a replacement engine..

If you are going to replace the entire engine take a look at a Cummins factory rebuilt. Not sure about the cost but at least you know it's done right. When our engine got replaced they removed the cab from the frame which looked pretty easy if have the right hoist. The mechanic told me it was way easier than trying to get it out the front. 8 bolts or something.

Pistons cracking can result from not cooling down properly after a hard tug…..even on a stock motor. Do not fret about the tuner remarks. A bone stock anything can go boom without proper use and care. Your truck, build it and enjoy it.

With that few miles on the head gasket either the tune is crap or the wrenching is. Any shop the recommends a Jasper engine is suspect, can you find anywhere else to have work done?
