Check Engine light on Codes 1693 and PO336. Truck would not start. Changed Crankshaft Positioning Sensor, Truck starts tach works on start-up then dies, engine limping. Do some more research and find out possible cause is tone ring as my old sensor was chewed up on end. Took new sensor back out and it was not chewed up. Put sensor back in truck starts up same codes.

Research some more to see what is involved to replaced tone ring. I might have tackled it, but I am getting a little to old to be laying underneath truck. I call up Cummins and tell servive man Codes I got and about old sensor being chewed up. He agreed with me that it was the tone ring. I asked him if they could fix and he said no problem, bring the truck in. Asked if I could drive truck 80 miles in limp mode, he asked if I had oil pressure, which I did. Drove truck to shop on a Thursday. Service man said they probally could not get to it till Monday. Called up late Monday afternoon as I was away over the weekend and was told they were researching on how to get oil pan off. Later that Monday night I received phone call from Cummins saying they were not interested in doing job because they were not properly equiped, did not have right lift. I hung up phone and was ready to KILL. I called next morning to to talk to day service manager and more or less was told same thing. He also said to me I could probally get this done for one thrid the price at a local shop. I would not have minded so much if they told me they did not want to work on truck to begin with, but I was told to bring it in and it would be fixed. Went to Cummins on Tuesday to pick up truck and drove back home, towing company wanted $480 to flat bed 80 miles. While I was at Cummins getting parts, I asked parts man if there was someone there higher up I could talk to about this problem. Someone came to talk to me about problem and I told him I thought I was bringing my problem right to the horses mouth and then to be told they did not want to do job. Just to pacify me he had two mechanics look at truck and then told me they could do job, two and one half days labor, that amounts to $1640 labor 20 hrs. at $82 an Hour. I just got my truck back from neighborhood garage. He did me a favor, has never worked on diesels before. He replaced tone ring in 5 Hrs. at a cost of $337. 50. He charged me book rate for replacing oil pan gasket 7. 5 Hrs. at $45 an hour. Small piece of tone ring still on crank and larger part of ring in six pieces laying in oil pan, just lucky I did not have any other internal damage. All said and done job cost less than one quarter then what Cummins wanted. Sorry about long post, but I just had to vent. Next mission is to send letter to Cummins registered mail, so hopefully I get some kind of reply.
