battery cap how to.

Alot of battery talk with winter coming and all. My green window has dissapeared about a year ago in my 1996 but the truck starts ok. I hear some guys telling to check the water level in the maintenance free batteries. How do you get the caps off? As I pry up the whole top of the battery lifts up.

The batteries on my '95's had four tabs on each cap joining the cap to the battery top,I cut mine with a sharp wood chisel and hammer but a sharp knife will work as well. My batteries are also semi-translucent,if you get the light right you can see the level though the side,the cells should be full to about 3/4-1 inch from the top. It helps to loosen the hold downs and tilt the battery to see the level better. Seems like the cell closest to the negitive pole is always the first to go low.
