BBD’s new motor
As many of you already know I had been working for a while with the fine folks at Piers Diesel Research in BC Canada. Back in May my wish cam true when I took a weeks leave and drove up to have the new motor installed. First off I would like to thank Piers and his staff they made me feel very welcome for the little time I was there. The new facility PDR is located in is awesome he is in a Performance Mall and has access to a turbo shop, a fuel injection shop, Cummins is right down the road, BD and Bill K’s shop are just a short drive away.
We started with a 98 non-53 short block (double drains for the twins) and added the following:
Enterprise billet cam
Custom piston kit, fly cut & ceramic coated
Custom pushrods
Custom lifters
Balanced crank, rods & pistons
O-ring block
Brand new cylinder head, port and polish stage III
Custom valve spring, retainer kit
PDR Stooped pump
Van Haisley high-pressure fuel system
PDR Valet switch
370 marine injectors
ATS pulse manifold
Enterprise modified twin turbo kit
PDR HX35 primary turbo
Billet waste gate
Dual pop off valves
PDR inter cooler boots
Haisley 1 3/8" HD input shaft
Enterprise Dual Disc Pulling clutch
New water pump
New shut off solenoid
New radiator hoses
Every thing went smooth I showed up on Tuesday morning and was driving home that Friday with a huge smile on my face. The guys pulled 3, 12 hour days to get me in and out in that short time frame. that’s pulling my motor building the new motor and installing it. We did run into one crimp the ID of the input shaft was machined about 12 thousands to small so when you insert the roller bearing she wouldn’t fit onto the main shaft. So I drove her home with the South Bend Con-O that was kind of like a safety feature till I reach the 5,000 break in miles.
Two days after I returned home I headed for Thunder in Muncie driving to Ohio to stay with family the week prior before I headed to Indiana. I made a one day stop in Pennsylvania were I visited Mark at Greensburg Machine and did the 1480 series drive shaft up grades and installed a Detroit Locker, then off to Muncie later that night. So I show up in Muncie with this new bad ass motor and driveline but can’t pull crap because I still have the Slipping clutch, big time bummer!!!! Since I couldn’t pull we decided to clean her up real nice and park in the show and shine section were we placed first in the over 30k class.
After departing Muncie I went back to Ohio to visit the folks at Enterprise Engine and have them install the input shaft and dual disc clutch. I got a few other items while I was there, a bell-housing blanket, Drive shaft loop parts, and an adjustable pulling hitch. Needless to say the ride back West across country was better then the ride going to the East.
I have pulled once since returning and blew the tappet cover gasket witch I fixed last week I also pushed the carrier bearing out I feel this was due to the street traction bars with poly bushings just to much movement. I have started ordering supplies to fabricate my own custom four-link system in the rear and extend the front two lower links.
I have taken several pictures of the engine rebuild and will be updating my web page and adding a section about the motor with those pics included.
Regards
BBD
