My6 Eats V-8's,
Thank you for the information. I remember seeing your truck in the last issue of TDR magazine pulling a sled. #ad
VERY nice looking rig. I remember it because you bought the "right" color. #ad

John & Bob,

There seems to be some question here about your credability, let me just interject here for a moment.

Quad,

I owed John, there are 3 people I feel i owed something to from my time at BD, now i know it wasnt my company, or my produts,or technically my problem, but i am who i am.

John, Jenny & Roger, Paul Haller,
For John, i called him and told him how i felt and told him the best i could do for him was to give him my labor for nothing on a Saturday when the shop was closed. I could give him a good deal on the parts but i couldnt give it to him for free.

I was going to do it by myself, on the weekend , it was my proudest moment when my guys Darrin & Vinnie, & Stefan showed up. They were not asked, it was their time and they were not paid for it.

Roger and Jenny, are hotshotters, TNL transport , some of you guys may know them, jmack,
they almost went bankrupt with the broken transmissions and the repair bills, they switched to a stick, Rogers shoulder wont take the punnishment day in and out and thats how he makes his living, i couldnt help him then, but i can now,, i gave them the same opportunity as John. I have publically asked anyone wanting switch their auto to a stick , call me, they have a 2001 2wd drive, and i will donate my facilities for the weekend no charge for the swap over or the shop. We are still wating for someone to take us up on the offer.

Paul Haller, same thing, my labor my time no charge.

As for Bob Wagner, i dont know why i did it, he tried Johns truck, and loved it, he was comming up and was going to pay full retail for it, i think it was his genuine faith in me and my products.

None of our customers, are ever told what to say about our products, good or bad I will take the lumps with the good.

While i feel very fortunate for their responses it is unsolicited and they dont owe me a single thing.

What i dont like is vendors deliberately lieing about a products ability to do something simply to sell them, maybe i have to grow up , that may be just business.

I dont have a problem with people making mistakes, i make mistakes,i am human.

Quad, i dont know what you think their agenda is, but obviously if it was hidden you would never have known about it.

The only person that has ever gotten sponsorship of company labor was Nowel(HVAC). We are dragracers and we did that one for fun.

While we are at it, when Mike Crossley towed Nowels truck here , i checked it out, i fixed the damages done by the torque loc.

Quad all i can say is that we get the people every day, dealing with fall out of the damaging decices like the mystery switch and torque loc, we work hard every day trying to get people to understand not to use them.

Companies that sell and install these products are not taking responsibility for the aftermath, if we can in any way educate ahead of time before the damage is done, forwarned is forarmed and then to each his own.

Like top fuel said, it is his choice to make and he does know the risk. The key is he does know.

Like Dieselnerd we also conducted the same study. We concur.

Bill Kondolay
Diesel Transmission Technology

My son is a Mechanical Engineer and has taken a look through this post and has come up with the following.

He says that an efficiency of 98% for a torque converter is possible to achieve. Several companies that make torque converters for muscle cars, such as Yank, have converters that are 98% efficient and lose only a handful of horsepower. Their website is www.converter. cc. Plugging in the appropriate numbers for Cdaledh's formula for efficiency yields 97. 4% if Tin = 100 deg F (311k) and Tout = 230 deg F (383 K). Since other companies have converters that are 98% efficient, and the formula shows almost 98% efficiency, how is it so hard to believe?

Making a stator out of titanium will be nearly impossible. The stator has to be a certain size (diameter) so making it from titanium will not only weigh more than aluminum, but the cost to do so will be outragous. It is nearly impossible to machine, even with carbide tools, and welding requires a special argon tub setup.

Also, the argument that steel is stronger pound for pound than aluminum is erroneous. 1040 steel has a yield strength (the ammount of force before the metal begins to permanently deform) of 60 ksi and a density of 7. 85 g/cc. 6061 aluminum has a yield strength of 40 ksi and a density of 2. 7 g/cc. The ratio shows the general trend that aluminum has a "specific" strength that is 1. 8 - 2 times greater than steel.

I don't want to get involved in the politics of whose company and converter is better. It is possible, however, to have a converter that is efficient as Mr. Roth has stated.

[Bill]... YOUR proudest mement?, I had NO idea Darin and Vinnie worked for nothing that day! #ad
#ad
Stefan, Crystal and Shanti either. It's a da*ned good thing you didn't tell me that when I was there as I would NEVER have let that happen. Never!

You see, the deal was Bill and I were supposed to complete the upgrade ourselves. . on a Saturday (and Sunday if necessary). Bill was going to donate his labor (i. e. , for free), but when I arrived Vinnie and Darin took over. Da*n, you guys are absolutely the best! #ad
I owe you guys. . big time! The next time I'm up there I WILL at the VERY LEAST buy dinner (your choice. . drinks, the whole da*ned deal)... man, I feel guilty! Bill, how in the he!! did you did you get lucky enough to find the crew that you have? Unbefrigginleavable!!!!

As I stated in my posts in the past, Bill (and the rest of the DTT crew) went WAY beyond what most (if not all) would consider exceptional customer service! Tell me, how in the heck could you possibly top that? That's right, you can't!

Thanks again guys! Really!

BTW JB (Quad... ), THE ONLY reason Rob asked you about selling your Suncoast TC (for me) was he was simultaneusly talking with me on the phone while instant messaging you. Once I found out he was IMing you, I had him ask. It was a spur of the moment kind of thing. Since you seemed to be parting out your Ram (so you could unload it), I thought you might be interested in selling it (the TC). And yes, I was only interested in it if the price was low... I normally don't buy used stuff (ESPECIALLY TCs), I just thought maybe I could "upgrade #ad
" from my (then) BD V10/Cummins hybrid TC.

I don't know why it wouldn't be patentable.
If there is no statutory bar or obligation to assign to another person or entity, it seems to me that an advancement in technology, even if it is a variation on an older theme, should be patentable.

Hey John,
You are dreaming #ad

MY6Eats sez:

"So the facts are as of right now is there is opptions as far as auto trannies and tc's go guys. "

JEEZE guys, isn't THAT one of the LEADING issues, we have OPTIONS!

Another sez:

"then why did BD wait for Bill to come out with his TC before making one themselves"

Got a news flash here - performance TC's have been offered by MANY different suppliers for nearly as long as Automatic trannies have been on the automotive market - neither Bill K *OR* BD are originators of the notion of improving or tailoring TC efficiency for specific wants or needs!

So the notion that one person was particularly motivated by what another happened to be "first" in is largely a non sequiter...

I know NOTHING first-hand about BD, and only what I have read about Bill K - plus his kindness in responding directly to some of my individual questions and concernes. I would feel ENTIRELY comfortable trusting Bill K with my truck and my cash when it comes to transmission work, and don't know but that the SAME would apply to BD's stuff. But THAT is only PART of the issue!

The primary issue to ME is the FACT that as new companies arrive on the scene, especially those with stuff that applies to MY "orphan" first generation truck, *I* WIN*!

Do ANY of you REALLY want BD and their products to disappear from the scene, taking their products WITH them? Do you REALLY think THAT would be better for our particular niche in the automotive market? Is LESS better?

The BD 'verters may NOT do exactly the same as Bill's, they MAY have characteristics that appeal to a DIFFERENT use or application - we're not ALL dragracers, some of us have different needs and expectations, so are MORE choices a BAD thing?

How's about we let this stuff rise or fall on its actual performance out in the real world?

JEEZE fellas, lets all step back, take a DEEP breath, and try to regain our perspective a little bit - this rabid character assination and personal abuse gets us NOWHERE! #ad

Dreaming? [about what?] #ad

Street Race? [that's illegal #ad
] I'll let you race my friend Dave Perea then... he loves "street" racing. #ad
If however, you want to take me up as stated before, what the heck, I'm game.

If you want to make it a towing game I'll ask my buddy Rob Hanson to take ya up on that one... he has the PERFECT rig for that (3500 QC 4x4 4. 10 6-speed with just about the same HP as me... unless he turns up his BD/BCBB ALL the way up #ad
)

..... different rigs for different intended uses.

As I said before "I am glad I did not buy an Automatic" I dont remember directing this to either of you. You as in John and Bob have taken this into left field. If this makes you feel better about youself by attacking me and a truck, YOU HAVE ISSUES. You need to gather your thoughts for your next attack. As I see from your last post you will need to get together with your friends and have them do your work for you. I see you are unable to handle it yourself!!!! Is "timidity" your problem? I dont know and I dont care!!!!
This is not my loss, I have forgotten more than you "John" will ever know. I dont need to pay people to improve my truck as you did. There is plenty of other posts where I can help people and get information myself w/o these attacks. If you have an oppinion state it. I will not be on this post any more. I can and do back up what I say. I will not be on this post any more. Sam

is it me or do these graphs look more interesting when you can see them at the same time , the X convertor doesn't look any better than the 6L .

looks like the 6L is better than the X at 150 hp , also the top hp is different but rating is the same , they need a better proof reader i think ????

H. O Ram, the ONLY thing on my Ram that I did not do myself is the transmission upgrade!!!! I've built many H. O. engines, setup numerous differentials and worked on EVERY 4x4 I've owned (which have been many over a constant 20 years now). I have made more trick parts and accessories for vehicles I've owned than you will ever know. I would challenge your work to stand up to mine any day!

In addition, I NEED NO ONE to "stand in" for me. Your the big mouth that is speaking with MUCH less than all the facts! Put up or shut up! I said I would run you on the drag strip... AND I MEANT IT. . any other type of chicken sh*t race is not acceptable to me (and I never eluded to it being so). I know one thing, if you can't row a 6-speed faster than Rob Hanson (AND have the power to back it up), you're toast!

The bottom line; I'm personally tired of your opinionated BS (whether on this thread or others) that is not supported with facts. Since you don't know the whole story regarding BD and DTT (or even a fraction thereof), you are in effect, a real nuisance.

Sorry if I have offended other TDR members with my retaliatory posts. #ad

I give up!!! to many graphs & #'s--I'll wait to hear the seat of pants and longevity ratings---chris

Three words
Tungsten Inert Gas (TIG)

I think your son needs to redo his math.
The quantity (mCp) can be canceled out, but if he canceled out any of the temperatures he has commited a fundemantal error.

ALL four temperatures change! NONE of them will be constant!

I just hope you did not pay for his education.

Hello Everyone... ... .

on a typical friday I'm usually fortunate enough leave town on my way to go camping, attend an NHRA or NCRS event or just to drive up into the Ozark mountains to trout fish and relax. I can't leave Memphis and cross the Mississippi river bridge without first driving by a hospital I hope most of you are familiar with. It's The Saint Jude Childrens Research Hospital. I'm proud that it's located here in my hometown. It's just "St. Jude" to us locals. If you are unfamiliar with St. Jude, they treat children who are suffering from life threatening illnesses. (at NO cost whatsoever to their families. ) Usually that would involve a diagnosis of Cancer in one vile malicious form or another. I know from the tragic experiences of a very dear and beloved friend that the care the children receive there is second to none. I also know that while my truck carries me zooming up the entrance ramp of the freeway toward a carefree weekend that, ..... well..... life changing events are happening behind those walls. Fill in the blanks in your own mind's eye. I won't state the obvious.

Gentlemen, I don't know anything about medicine except how to open an asprin bottle. Diesel engine knowledge is of little use in there. I can and do try to help in another small way. I roll up my sleeves on donate something they need. Seven gallons and counting. I believe I'll find out in Heaven where it all went.

Now... What does this have to do with torque converters? Well, Everything and Nothing. It's all a matter of your perspective. It depends upon whether you're hammering up the onramp in that big diesel dually - or - hidden behind the walls afraid and praying about your child's next biopsy.

Yes Sir, that drive by St. Jude has NEVER failed to swing my moral pendulum back to where God intended it to be. Forgive me for my "preaching" here, but I guess this is my way of saying we all need to take a good hard look at what we post. We ARE friends aren't we??? That onramp drive puts my torque converter efficiency rating at about number 1,893 on my top ten list of what's important to me. My truck parts are a poor substitude for good Friends. Thank You.
