Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Belt flew off

I have a 99 24 valve and Will driving home yesterday my alt. belt came off and got ate up. Luckily I had the old one with me. I though the tensioner pulley locked up but it didn't, everything is fine. I put the old one on and have about a hundred miles on it and no problem. The new one only had about nine thousand miles on it. I'm going to replace the tensioner and pulley because I don't trust it. Anybody had this happen to them? Rather be save than sorry.

Some folks have had to place a shim in-between the upper tensioner bolt and the block to get the tensioner pulley running in line with the rest. Yours is the first I've heard of coming off, usually they just ride up so only half the belt is on the pulley

Since the belt flew off you may be out of alignment like Bill says, get a straight edge in there and check all the shives, make sure to spin the idler to see if it is consistant too, a bit out will cause more havoc than you can imagine, also I dont know where to get them but sombody sells an aftermarket idler that is steel and no plastic , get one of those babys.

Waldo , I just had trouble with my belt a few weeks ago. I had to shim the tensioner to make mine ride true. My old belt seemed to ride in the grooves just fine, but when I put a Gatorback on it jumped out of the grooves. I had to put two shims in. one on top and one to the right (facing the tensioner) of the mounting bolt.

The Practical Solutions Diesel Products Heavy Duty Idler Pulley replaces the OEM plastic idler. If your problem is in the idler pulley bracket, the replacement pulley won't cure an alignment problem.

Thanks for the input. I ordered the heavy duty pulley from practical solutions and a new tensior from the parts house. I'll check the alignment also. Hope it all works not sure what else to do.

I won't rib you like Whitmore . Replacing the tensioner arm assembly will solve the problem... no worries. I had to replace the original one on my '92 dodge at about 180,000 miles and all is well at 240,000 miles. The belt was riding to the front of the AC pulley and eating the belt up. Replaced the pully and the tensioner arm all as one assembly and solved the problem!
