I have an Aisin transmission diagnostic question related to the "4th gear only" Limp Mode occurring when heavy hauling in hot weather, 2018 Ram 3500 Cummins 6.7 with Aisin. It has been diagnosed and repaired once using codes read by my dealer right after the truck was brought in, displaying the symptoms as it was shut off. I still have the problem appear. However, before it could need half an hour of cooldown to go away, now just shutting down and restarting the truck seems to clear it the past time or two it happened.
I would like a "live scan" capable scanner tool that I can use to get the best diagnostic information to support the dealer's next look at it. Full 2018 Ram code access including the Cummins 6.7, live scanning, "freeze frame" data collection, those are some of the things I'm seeking.
My search today has been frustrating for a lack of specific information about the capabilities of the tools for my 4th gen diesel HD Ram. The Foxwell MD808 Pro looks like it could be applicable, but no solid information found including the Foxwell website. Autel and some others come up looking promising. Can someone with specific knowledge and experience respond?
This thread has previous information about my issue:

TransEngineer has been most helpful, including with some private message responses. Unfortunately for getting information (but good otherwise), Aisin problems have not occurred enough to help even him to have deep knowledge of what to expect.
Hence the search for a reliable scan tool that will work with the Cummins 6.7 and Aisin, diagnosing engine and transmission control problems and codes. Do not mind a cost in the hundreds, if it is the right tool to own for solving this and for future use.
Thanks

I'll 2nd the AlfaOBD setup! It only works with Android phone or tablet or Windows OS laptop. Get the security bypass cable and a small Android tablet if your not using an Android phone. The AlfaOBD software allows code reading, live data logging along with allowing you to program keys, TPMS sensors and change settings on your truck! Just remember to save a log of the config file to keep track of any changes done to truck! Plenty of support both on here and other forums for the AlfaOBD platform. Good luck with the issues.
Forgot to add that you can sync with a google drive to send file and reports too. This comes in handy. Also once you save a config file, print it out and highlight the changes made. This has come in handy for me with the changes I've made. Much easier to look at a printout then a screen shot!

Thanks all. For AlfaOBD, I'm finding as of 2018 a security bypass module has to be installed behind the radio to run the tool, or any other by a non-dealer apparently. Now this is sounding a bit unfeasible. The module must be removed before going for service, because it will block function of the dealer's scanning tool, and with 5 more years of factory warranty at stake do not want to anger those gods.
Does someone know of a different way to be able to do a live scan and collect freeze frame data along with codes during driving, so I have the best info to take in?
I plan to have an Edge CTS3 installed soon for increased data monitoring on the road. Perhaps what it will collect may be the best available approach? I also have a simple code scanning tool that displays the code definitions nicely on the screen, as well as the long list of DTC's from the TDR 2018 Buyers Guide. I don't know how many, if any, of the proprietary FCA/Ram DTCs are included in this code reader. Transmission DTCs in particular seem less likely.
Someone with 2018+ Ram Cummins experience who can speak to my situation?
Thanks again,
Don

The bypass module does not go behind the stereo, instead it goes on the OBDII port and plugs into the CANBUS right there. It's an easy install and removal. As far as I know it does not block the dealers ability to do anything if left it, but it's not a big deal to remove/bypass it either.

I have a CTS2 and AlfaOBD. The CTS2 shows some stuff, and can read/clear codes but AlfaOBD is a whole other level of data.

As long as you put the OEM OBD connector back in stock location (disconnect from the bypass) the dealer won't even know it is there if if the bypass cable is left in place.

Please take a look on the AlfaOBD website, at the information page for the Ram bypass device. Instructions are to remove screws in dash top tray and next to 110v outlet, to tip radio module out, and install behind in that area. Not at the OBDII port. We seem to be talking about different things. The “Tazer Ram” bypass module instructions is what I looked at.
Thanks

And, note again this issue and need is only for 2018 and later FCA vehicles, does not exist for 2017 Ram.

P.S. if the bypass cable or harness you’re speaking of does the job for 2018+, and the Tazer module is not needed, then ? Makes more sense. I do see the bypass cables also on their site.

Here is something interesting. Earlier reading indicated ALL of the FCA vehicles have the Secure Gateway Module or “Firewall” starting in 2018, but this article quotes an industry expert saying Ram and Jeep Grand Cherokee didn’t get this till 2019. Confirmed????

My 2018 has it as well.

The cable is a short jumper to tie the two busses together, it's really simple and is faster then typing this post.

You will most likely need that for anything to work regardless of mfg.

I have it in my 2018 was quick and Painless.

Also running AlphaOBD.

I have a 2018, AlfaOBD, and a security bypass module. I didn't have to remove anything on the dash.

I do not know about the Tazer, but all the bypass modules I have seen go inline at the OBDII port.

This is what I use. https://www.kaodtech.com/product-page/security-module-bypass

Thank you. I looked at its instructions, certainly straightforward to use and should “leave no trace” if connectors handled gently. On the other hand, I have an extremely friendly relationship with the service folks at Dick’s Country Ram in Hillsboro, OR, and want to keep it that way. I think I will ask them about this and see if they are comfortable with my doing it to get more information. They could also send a mechanic with scanner for a test drive with me on a hot day when the symptoms should show up, to collect codes and freeze frame data. Or supplement my code reader data with DIY “freeze frame” collected from factory and CTS3 readings in the moment. Without their blessing, think I will defer using a bypass until my excellent 8 year factory “maximum” warranty has expired.
Appreciate all the good advice. Sounds likely the AlfaOBD may remain the tool of choice for another 4-1/2 years while my warranty runs.
