I need to find out what the best locker would be for sled pulling. I need something that is tough & will take the abuse of high horsepower & torque. I dont care if it is noisy or hard on tires it just needs to be bulletproof. This will be going in a dana 80 that im building to replace my 70. Thanks Kurt.

From what you described the Detroit is the answer to your question. I just ordered one last Friday and I will get it tomorrow along with the new 4. 30 ring and pinion. Reider Racing is the pace where I bought mine. I got the front and read Ring and pinion along with both install kits and the Detroit locker for $1414. 75. I think the Detroit came down to be $550. With the Detroit locker you will need a 4. 10 Gear or lower or numerically higher.

Good Luck

Trey

If you were building it for sled pulling it would put 4. 10's in it any ways but f you Keep the 3. 54 i am pretty sure you can do an ARB. I sure someone else will chime in and tell you if i am giving you the right information. In my case i am running a 37 inch tire and the 4. 30 will put be back in my torque range and the Detroit will give me the traction i need.

Thanks Pat i will probably go with the arb because im going to stay with the 3. 55 gears. I looked it up also & i cant get a detroit for the 80 with the 3. 55. If i was going with larger tires i would go to the 4. 10 but i have enough power to spin the 33s pretty good. As it is i can put the tach in the red going down the track. Thanks guys. Kurt.

If you really want the best rear end for f pulling, and it isn't a street truck, Why not go with a Spool? guaranteed to give both tires equal and full power. Very simple and nothing to break. I use to do sand drags and that is how I ran.

I've got a 70, to make it work in an 80 (Gene) you have to have some machine work done on the bolt holes (bigger as I remember) even with that I had a bud prep it on a lathe so I could get the bearing on and off without a puller while I was setting back lash.

Jim

You have to order a detroit locker for a HD D-70 and then as Jim said, drill out the holes because the pinion bolts are bigger. I've had mine in my 95 3500 w/D-80 & 3. 54's for a year now. It's aggressive on the street, but worth it.

Exactly what will i have to drill to make this work?Thanks for the heads up on the moser axles Gene. Do you have a good source for the axles & locker. kurt.

just need to drill the holes where the pinion bolts go through. You'll need to have a machine shop do it, not like you can do it with a handdrill. I have a set of moser axels in my puller,only cost $295 if i remember, their 35 spline, 1. 5"diameter non tapered.

Im not sure what holes need to be drilled. Holes on the locker or holes on the axle housing. Sorry but im not real knowledgable on the axles yet. I do know that i need a detroit locker for a 70hd,Moser 35 spline axles. will i need to order the axles to fit a 80 or a 70hd. can i order the locker for 3. 54s already modified to go in my 80 housing. Thanks for all the help guys. Kurt.

Spool is definately way stronger than a Detroit. It also has the advantage of surviving an axleshaft breaking. Detroits usually don't survive if the shaft breaks at an angle because the inner piece is shoved into the locker. Only disadvantage is the tires will scrub going around a turn.

$ 295 is a good price, I believe they list for $385.

Lets see if I can mess this up- The bolts on the 70 HD are 1/2", the 80 carrier are 9/16"

You need the axles for the 80.

If you order the locker from Greensburgh, I'm sure he could modify it for you before it was shipped. Should be other shops near you that can handle this, save on shipping.
