Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) Best source for wastegate actuator

Today is the first day I hammered down on the truck since I installed my boost/egt gauge. Egt's got to 900 but boost went to almost 30. Obviously my wastegate isn't working. I didn't think a stocker would pump enough fuel to reach that figure. I haven't had to time to diagnose the wastegate problem but more than likely it is the actuator don't ya think? It wasn't stuck when I installed the engine back in November.

If it turns out to be a bad actuator is there one available from the aftermarket that's better and/or cheaper than the stocker? If not, do I order one from Cummins, Dodge, or HTT? I assume there is a difference in the actuators because the autos develop around 18psi and the sticks push 23 or so. Should I ask for one for 215 engine?

Also, if the actuator is bad can it be leaking boost? I assume they work kinda like a vacuum motor in reverse with a rubber diaphragm.

As far as I know all actuators are the same. Perhaps your is misadjusted or you have a pinched line limiting the boost signal to the actuator. I don't know that I would consider replacing it yet at this point. Also I personally would not worry about it turing 30psi of boost, that is within the capabilities of the HX35.

All the actuators from Dodge are the same but the different part#s come preset to the correct pressure for that application. Then again most Dodge parts guys will not be able to find the numbers. They are not in the parts book.

Banks makes a 'Big Head' actuator that allows for higher than stock boost, but doesn't require the boost fooler type elbow. Opens up fast when you get on it.

I just placed an order for a boost elbow with Piers last week. I will have to troubleshoot my problem before I buy anything but I'll keep ya in mind.



I plan to grind on my plate very soon. Probably do the best I can within the confines of a stock plate to make something resembling a #10.

Speaking of Banks, if you have a Banks installer nearby ask them if they have any stock turbo housings w/ wastegates lying around. Many folks will have a Banks kit installed and leave the old parts with the installer. Great source for stock plates to grind down also. Banks installer near me used to give me the leftover parts for free but alas he retired.
