Don't rely on the Timming pin as TDC . . like others have said . it all depends on the pump. . I used a dial indicator to find TDC by dropping the exhaust valve and marking the Harmonic balancer right at the peak TDC. . Both my 92 and 93 were too advanced using the timing pin. . My 93 is 1. 4mm with the pump set right were the factory marks are (supposed to be 1. 25mm there). . I always though it ran better before I bumped it . . once I got a timming kit I figured out why.
My 92 was supposedly "timed" at 1. 5mm when I bought it but . I knew by how rough it was running that it was too far advanced. I retarded the pump by hand to get it a bit smoother. . Later on when I got my dial indicator I measured 1. 78. this is after I pulled it down at least a 16th" from it's "advanced " adjustment. . I find these two trucks to run their smoothest , coolest and most responsive at true 1. 4mm. . I'm sure the timing pin positioning may be slightly different from engine to engine but both mine are too advance to rely on for true TDC. . They certainly are OK to use for valve adjusting purposes... .
As said before some trucks might run better with more or less advance ,, this is just my experience... ... . Carry on...
