BF Goodrich announces voluntarily safety recall for the T/A Commerical 235/85 16. I have heard they are replacing them with Michelin LTX M/S2's.

I bought my used trailer last year and went to the Tire shop in Tennessee and bought some BFG's so I would not have to worry about tire failure on the trip back to Texas. Now the recall which is good they let us know, however, I do not know anything about the LTX M/S 2 for reliabilty.

The only Michelin I heard good things about was the Michelin XPS Rib tire.

Is there anyone on here know of have experience with the LTX M/S2?

I personally have run a set of the Michelin's on a 1500 suburban for 30,000+ miles, never had a problem. Towing a bumper pull trailer a lot of those miles

Also, have a set just bought for the dually, I just liked them that much. The only "slight" drawback that I have seen is that they are a "gravel slinger".

I will let the people that have towed with them on their pickups for longer chime in with a more informed opinion.

I think that Michelin is the standard OEM tire on all Ram 2500 or Ram 3500 srw trucks. I've used them for years as the replacement tire when the OEM Generals wear out on Ram duallies. Excellent tires. They are not an all steel carcass for trailer use like the XPS Ribs but are high quality tires.

LTX M/S 2's are one of the best tires on the road. I've run several sets of the original LTX M/S's on several vehicles and my father has a set on his Avalanche now. They ride great, have excellent wet and snow traction for the 1st 1/2 of the tread life. After that they're worthless in the snow and not much better on a wet road.

Thanks for the heads-up! I was going to order new trailer tires this weekend and was trying to decide between the Commercial T/A and the XPS Rib. Guess I'll go with the Michelon at $100 more per tire.

Well, I called NTB and they were going to check on the recall and get back with me. Since I did not hear back from NTB I called the BFG Recall Hotline and discussed the tire choices and comparisons. I asked if they would go with the XPS rib tire and he said if the Tire Dealer had them they would. So, I called Discount Tire and the salesperson said they know about the recall and he said they were replacing the BFG T/A with Michelins LTX M/S2's. I asked if the sidewall was as strong as the Commercial T/A and he felt it was. I asked if the sidewall was steel and he said it was... I then questioned that as I do not believe the LTX has a steel belted sidewall or as strong sidewall I should say. I asked about replacing them with the XPS Rib Tire and he said he would check on it and get back with me.
So I am waiting to see if which one will be approved. I do know the BFG Commercial T/A has 15/32 tread, XPS has 15/32 tread, but the M/S2 has 13/32nds.

I slung the thread off a Uniroyal Laredo when my trailer had 16k miles and was a year old. I installed the spare and pulled it straight to SAM's Club first thing the next morning and had the tire guys install a set of XPS Ribs. When they pulled the other three wheels with Uniroyals another one had already begun tread separation. I called Michelin, who owns Uniroyal and BFG, and described the problem. They reimbursed me for the two bad Uniroyals and paid for NuWa's service department to repair the damage to the side of the trailer. Michelin didn't give me the replacement Michelin tires, I paid full price at SAM's, but they did reimburse me for the unused tread depth on the two bad Uniroyals. I gave the other two to a friend who needed them.

Harvey, If they are going to use the M/S 2's for the replacement you think I would be better off long term to pay the difference and get the XPS Ribs?

You have a point and that is a great suggestion.

Ron,

IMO, if your trailer is a large and heavy fifthwheel with a gross weight of 12k or above yes, I do. Michelin XPS Ribs are the gold standard of load range E tires for trailers.

Well I now have the Michelin XPS Ribs... can't wait for my trip to Arkansas in November to see if there is any difference. Wish I had a Maxbrake
