Hi Guys!

I've owned Dodge diesels since '99 - all newer leased trucks that I couldn't mess with, but I never-the-less dropped in to TDR on a regular basis. I finally got tired of a big lease payment on a truck I didn't own and found a sweet '91 W250 last May. I've been going through and getting the obvious things up to par (although it wasn't really too bad) and I'm getting close to adding some moderate upgrades to it - so I'll be back to the forum off and on I'm sure (although I've learned a **TON** just surfing and reading!!). I'm a 'newbie' of sorts to diesels, but most other aspects of trucks, mechanics, maintenance and repair I'm fairly well versed in.

Here's my question for tonight: I keep reading about the BHAF, the 'Old Smokey' kit, and other air induction upgrades. But is the BHAF a generic term for any after market air filter, or are you guys referring to one (or two) specific air filters (and or air boxes)?

From surfing the forums, it looks like the AEF is a pretty good way to go, but if I get the stock replacement drop-in element is that the BHAF that's referred to? I also see that the Fleetguard filter is also refered to as a BHAF, but, again, is that a drop-in replacement element or an entire airbox assembly? Trust me guys, if I've been surfing this site for the last couple days looking for this info and if it's here (and I'm sure it is - someplace!!) I'm not having any luck finding it!!

I'd like to have the above points clarified and know where to obtain these specific components.

Thanks in advance for any help and input!!!

PS: Engine upgrades planned before summer are a full compliment of gauges, injectors, turbo housing, and of course, air filter!! That goes along with a little bit of suspension lift, tire and wheel upgrade, and some minor body cleanup!!

Welcome to the TDR! :)

If you do a search on "BHAF", you will find plenty of reading.

The BHAF is big paper air filter. Not drop-in replacement. The hose on the ('94-'02) truck will fit right on to the filter end. I don't know if it will fit the earlier trucks though, without making some sort of adapter. The filter has a 4" inlet.

MO, the filter will not fit in the housing, hence the old smokey mount. It hold the filter in suspension with some clamps. Does it see water under the hood? Can critters chew the paper? I don't know. I use the big filter in the summer for towing my rv trailer and quads, but in the winter around here, I put my K$N and housing back on. I drilled my housing and used stainless screen over the holes to keep out critters. The big filter helps with towing temps. Hope this helps with your question! Tim

Tim, are you saying our stock air intake tube can slide over the inlet of the BHAF? Then what, use some bailing wire or something to suspend it in the air box's place, with air box removed?

Bmoeller, we can buy this same BHAF, from a different manufacturer? Is that what those part numbers represented? That'd be cool, go find it cheaper than your local diesel shop. Bill

Here's my 2 cents:p The BHAF's are stand alone filters. By this I mean you can't use the old filter housing. These are to big to fit into the box. An old smokey mount will fasten a BHAF to the fender. I removed the stock box and use zip ties to hold it in place. These are not drop ins.

Here are interchangable part #'s for the BHAF.

Hey guys - thanks for all the input!! You really cleared up a couple of things and I've got a line locally on a "BHAF" for my '91. One last question if you don't mind - is an 'old smokey' mount something I can buy someplace or is something I can/should fabricate myself? If you can buy an 'old smokey' mount someplace where do you get 'em?

Thanks again guys!!!!

If you're worried about water, critters, etc, Outerwears makes covers for them. Reasonably priced, from what I've read here. Been thinking about replacing the old K&N; just dont seem to get the same bang for the buck.

Question- I have a 93 airbox/ filter adaptor on my 91; will the BHAF "bolt on" to it? Or do I need to fab up a OLD SMOKY type mount? THe pic looks like it has a lip that the filter hose will connect to.

Daniel

Come on someone with a jerry-rigged BHAF setup- that is no mount, just some wire ties, bailing wire etc whatever it take to hang it there, give us a pic to see what it looks like? AND will a 2nd gen intake hose fit on our turbo inlet? Bill

I ordered a BHAF,and will be picking it up tomorrow... . If someone doesn't post a reply on whether or not it'll fit the stock air intake hose i'll let you know. ;)

bgilbert-

Yes, a 2nd Gen intake hose will bolt up to our stock turbo, as long as your truck is intercooled. If not, it will be WAY too big. Ran into that problem when I went to install a PDR HX35 last spring.

Daniel

Well darn, the compressor side inlet is bigger on intercooled models huh, hmm... anyone tell me if the Napa BHAF #2790 flows a good amount of air? Say compared to a stock fleetguard air filter in the airbox? how much we looking at for the Napa BHAF? Bill

I put 4 new Fleetguard Filters on EBay for sale Part Number AH19002 I was using them on a Marine 5. 9 Cumminms. These may be the same item. They clamp on to the turbo . item 2459312153

Sorry for not getting back to you. I used a piece of aluminum flat bar the length of the filter with a nole drilled in it to support it fron the fender where a hole is already there. I then used two long stainless hose clamps to go around the circumferance of the filter front and rear. Note: I used screen under the clamps next to the paper element for critter control. The outlet of filter will attach to the inlet tube with no problems. There is a little issue of clamping force and gap when you get to clamping tube on, just use your own judjment on this, no biggie! Well worth the effort. Tim

Anybody ever hear of or try an S&B filter?

I have one on my marine Cummins... . clamps directly to the turbo inlet... awsum... ... they are made similar to a K&N (lifetime re-cleanable) but much heavier duty and finer filtration.

I have the model with the hi-temp elastomeric sleeve... flows 1050 cfm and supposedly good to 550 hp on a Cummins. Cost me $68 which I didn't think was too bad.

I had a BHAF, tried a K&N, but the wimpy neck failed in 2 running hours... wanted a cleanable, dryable filter in case of a "water event".

Just thought I'd trow this into the ring so to speak.

Jay

I'd forgotten about S&B. Thanks for the input, East Coast Jay.

Looks like I may stop by the farm store here in Qulin and see how much they charge for a 2790. I got to looking yesterday, and my K&N a) isnt filtering- no REAL surprise, and b) gets dirty and clogged up almost as fast as a stock filter. Only drawback to the latter is, they are $40+ around here.

Daniel

Mike has quit making the old smoky mount... in fact I got the last one!

The only other option right now (and it is a very good one) is Sam's ASA intake. Sam is a really cool guy and he makes a very spiffy product. He is a member here, and I expect him to chime in.

I would recommend aFe filters, they are TWICE the filter! I have the aFe that is used in the 2nd gen "Mega Cannons" and I love it.

Benefits, if you go to Old Smokey's readers rigs gallery you can see pics of the mount and a BHAF. If you had the BHAF, in hand you should be able to make one easily. As said before, the BHAF will set on the fender quite nicely, you can view my RR gallery to see that. Only I would suggest after running this way for a month or so, is at least a 'rain shelf or roof' over the top of the filter, when its sprinkling or raining when you have the hood up. Bill
