BHAF in N. Texas

That's strange Lazy, I got quoted $43 something from the Cummins in Mesquite a few weeks ago. Had to hold back on pulling the trigger since I had a nearly virgin stock filter in at the time. What can I say, I'm cheep. I do have one ordered however. Got it at Southwest International in McKinney after one of the guys in our local club told me about it. Fleetguard for $30. 03. I'm going to start buying all my filters there since I'm by there a couple of times a week. Great outfit, they are a buck or 2 below Cummins for the Fleetguard filters that I need. He ordered a case of the fuel filters for the 2k+ after asking him about it. Can't comment on the others but I'm sure they would extend the same courtesy on the other filters if they don't already stock them.

BTW Lazy, ever been to the Big Dodge Diesel Club meetings?

God bless the USA!

Exhaust Blanket from Geno's garage....

Broke down and spent the money. Had it in two days now. Fits really snug and drops over the exhaust outlet pretty far and has pins to wire tie it if you desire. It also has a hole for the EGT probe to go through. It does not cover the turbo housing at all. Though with all the fresh air going in there I doubt that would be the greatest source of heat anyway. I popped the hood after some hard running and could keep my hand on the filter. Definitly much cooler.

I ran without it for weeks and had no fears of fire. I could touch it (Just not for long) after runs. Did not notice any EGT reduction with the blanket, I suppose they can't get much lower than the filter already dropped them:D

Their claim is it keeps hotter air from the top of the engine compartment which would be good to get cooler air through the filter. I have no way of verifying these claims though. Maybe when I get some free time I'll remote a temp probe under the hood with the blanket on and off.

As far as looks I could take it or leave it. Kind of NASA like:)

Well that's my report on one possible solution to the heat problem,

I've had the BHAF installed for awhile now, and it did drop my EGT's a bit. I towed heavy for the first time since today (about 11k of bricks) and the truck never got above 1000-1050F pre. I was pretty impressed. I was only in 5th gear and keeping it to 45 mph or less (I wasn't too sure if I had enough air in the trailer tires for that much weight, but it was only 10 miles), but the truck did have to work pretty hard on some steep hills.

Nice. :D

Bought mine from Cummins South for $35 last Friday. Installed it Monday. I want to put on a sock for sure. I'll send Fleetguard an email for filtration specs.

sock

alan--if you can find some 6" orthopaedic stockinette, a length of it should make a nice sock. it will stretch to fit over the filter and cling to it.

redneckdr, Didn't think about that. I was going to make one out of thin foam, but I think you have a good idea there. I've seen that stuff and it is tough.

Ordered my "Big Honker" from Cummins in Mt Clemens, and got a call yesterday that it was in and the price $52,49. Picked it up this morning and there was a different person working parts counter and the price was 41. 29. No arguement from me.

Cummins Dallas BHAF price

Hyde,

Yea, Cummins Dallas quoted me $42. 00 over the phone. Then when I get there it was $35 ??. Isn't there some kind of club you can join or something to get a discount?

No, I haven't been to the Big Dodge Diesel Club meetings but would be interested. When and where are they?

880 vs. bhaf

I've had the bhaf in for about a week now. I haven't seen any drop in egt's. Only difference I've noticed between the 880 and bhaf is that the bhaf is a little quieter.

Concerning Hyde's request for info on the filter, the following is a response I received from Fleetguard:

Alan, This filter assembly has 830 grams dirt holding capacity,

the final efficiency is 99. 9% and rated flow is 918. 19 ft3/min.

I'll check on micron filtering spec.

Moparguy filter on the way

Couldn't stand it anymore, broke down and ordered one. Does it ever stop?

:D :D :D :D

Filter ordered

Ordered my filter from Cummins Mid America in Wichita, KS. the other day, should be here next week, quoted me $37. 72. Hope it helps in all areas, low end power, smoke and egt's as my filter minder is almost at the change interval and I have noticed a loss of some of the low end which I hope is from the lack of breathing. What is the concensus about using something to support the tube and filter connection from collapsing when clamped together does it need anything or not and how long do you all think the filter is good for?

So much talk about this BFAF. So I had to buy one and give it a try. The Cummins distributor in Columbus, Ohio charged me $42. 00 (614-771-1000).

Road test---peak temps are down over 200 degrees, and normal driving is also down about 50 degrees. In fact it is hard to get my BOMB'ed engine over 1000 degrees (pre-turbo).

I just hope it keeps out dirt.

Since there was a question about filtration, here's the answer from Fleetguard:

The air filter has only one chance to remove all the dirt entering the

intake. Air filters do not have micron ratings. Air filters must remove all

of the dirt, not just certain sizes. (Test procedure is SAE J726).

Just towed with the BHAF for the first time. Wow, on a usual trip that I would get 10 mpg (all up hill) I pulled 12. 5 mpg. That is on the trip computer, I think it is off 1 mpg per tank of gas. I can't feel any mopower, but it sure sounds cool. My truck is bone stock except for BHAF. Not even a guage  It is a financial thing. I have the bombing disease... ... ... ...

how does it sound?

My 99' is stock except for exhaust (4" from turbo back to pair of 5" stacks). Does the BHAF allow more "turbo whine" than the stock box filter. I hear a good bit now, but more would be better.
