Does this practice of placing cardboard (or plastic) in front of the radiator do any good in cold weather ??

If so, when "should" one do it and what are the benefits ??

It helps the engine warm up more quickly. It also helps maintain a warmer engine which lets the heater produce more heat. If you do this, be careful not to block the entire radiator and don't place your cardboard or whatever in front of the air to air. Blocking off the airflow through the air to air and then working the truck will generate EGT's that are too high.

Hello

I live in alaska and I Put the cardboard between the intercooler and the radiator. the engine likes that cold dense air comming thru the

intercooler into the intake. helps for warm up then the engine warms up to its operating temp. I am happy.

Yeah, I do the same. I have a sheet I keep folded up under the backseat that I put between the radiator and intercooler. I cut a hole in the center to allow SOME air flow through and I only use it when it colder than about 35. It helpes warm the truck faster since I don't have my exhaust brake anymore and only have a 4 mile drive to work in the morning.

I block mine too and it helps noticeably. If I don't have it blocked and it gets below 20, I don't really get any heat in the cab. I have left it blocked up to 50 during a few warm spells and it has never started to get too warm.

The advantages it provides are that you get better heat, the engine warms up faster, and your temp gauge won't cycle as much.

YUP - been blocking off all but about 8 inches down each side of radiator - works great, now if I just don't get brain-fade, and forget to take it out when temps rise...
