Hey Kat I thought that you were a moderator not an instigator!

Hey J. R. - You need to lighten up, dude.

Anytime we can get Kat out of his box and funnin' with the boys it's a good thing.

Life's too short! :) ;)

JR,

I still not sure what happened. With Strick9's... What I have heard was it was a second hand turbo bought used from another truck owner that installed twins (I Think?). Then they went out to the dragstrip and blew up a couple of turbos(B-1 and a Hybrid H2E). By the 300 ft or 1/8 mile times they expected 11 sec. ET with the B-1 . They are supposed to send it down for failure analysis. . Then we will know...

Devil Dogs Turbo was our ASSEMBLY/Build error..... We have Next Day Aired a new KS-B1 back. :)

The compressor nut was over-torqued causing it to fail.

I kinda hope that was what caused the turbo on strick9's to fail... . The components these are built from are extremely sturdy... The shaft size is large . . Bigger then the H2E at the Turbine wheel. . these are the only two turbos (B1's) that have had problems. . They were both low time turbos... And neither trucks are reported to Extreme High HorsePower.

Katdiesel Call me when you are awake ;)... Kurt

P. S. This spell checking is cool!

Thanks Kurt,

For you fast response and professionalism in this matter. You have excellent customer support. :)

Cant wait to get the New KS B-1 ( I think I'll leave bomber out this time):D :D :D Turbo.

Thanks Kurt! One question left and this is for Strick-9. How much fuel is your pump putting out on the stand? You can PM me if you like. Or better yet, my # is in my profile. :)

Those B1's are FAR from indestructible.

A 24 valver with 350 HP bought it and drove it for 1500 miles before going to twins. He didn't ever pushed it over 45 psi of boost. The turbo felt tight and I knew it hadn't been abused, so I thought I would try it out. I have been wanting to try one since I read all the raving reports.

I installed it, lubed it, let it idle for 5 minutes. Then I drove home nice and easy. The next day I drove 3 hours to the race track. Again, taking it easy all the way. I had changed my oil less than two days before installing the turbo, so dirty oil isn't a problem either.

I'll have to admit, going from the H2E I've been running, I really liked the spool up. The turbo felt nice around town.

But then I decided to make a few passes down the 1/4 mile. I made one pass taking off very slowly and ran 14. 0 @ 99 mph.

The next pass I decided to turn it up a bit. I launched fairly hard and reached for the nitrous button. As soon as I touched the nitrous button in 2nd gear, the turbo exploded.

My SPA digital gauges recorded a peak boost of 62 psi.

The turbo blew completely apart. One of the wheels blew a hole through my hood and left about 5 dents in it. Both intercooler boots on the passenger side of the engine have holes in them from the flying debris.

I pulled the intercooler off and found pieces in there as well.

I pulled the motor and found two pieces in the oil pan! It seems that two pieces found their way down the oil drain straight into the pan.

So I have a ruined hood and two ruined intercooler boots.

Then throw in the fact that I get NO warranty.

I don't believe this is a case of an over-torqued nut. Nothing is salvagable from this turbo. Both wheels are gone! The compressor housing has holes through it from the explosion. Even the turbine housing has a hole in it from flying parts.

J. R. , My pump has put out 1050 ccs on the pump stand, but I had it turned down slightly while the B1 was on.

Now, I'm starting to wonder if these B1 bombers are not as tough as everyone thought. Or, could it be a bad batch of components that caused the failure? Just wondering since we have not heard of any failures until now and the turbo has been out for a while.

Charles,

I would give Kurt the benifit of the doubt. He seems to be on top of these things. I think they are super tough. Remeber all of the HX40's that got huffed. One B1 is pretty good track record. Plus he sent a new on out right away. What if I was going to run a HX40 as the little turbo and a B1 for the monster? Can you say copper head gasket?

A recipe for turbo failure........

Charles,

I run a B1 turbo, paid full price for it and have no financial interest in selling anything diesel related but was agast when I read Stick 9's post that B1's are far from indestructible. I totally agree , no turbo, no engine is indestructible. In fact if I set out to overspeed and blow a turbo deliberately I would overfuel the engine for the amount of air (boost) then hit the nitrous while the turbo was still spooling!! That should do it even if it had a working wastegate (the B1 does not). The B1 was designed to perform over a wide range of boost levels with the 50's being ideal top and the 60#'s doable. When the drive pressure on a small turbo such as ours goes from 50lbs to 150lbs in a nanosecond the turbo wheels and shaft will fail from the overload. Watch the tractor pullers spool their turbos before they launch. There is a reason! A lot of folks witnessed a HX40 grenade at Muncie 2001 drags, when the nitrous button was hit. A highly modified Powerstroke blew the turbo and the bottom of his engine out doing the same but he even had more help in destructing his engine in that he was dribbling enough propane to insure that engine timing was "out the window". Sorry for the rant but there is no warrenty when drag racing with nitrous (I know the difference between nitrous in gas and diesel) on any engine related components. :--) :--). :) :)

I'm not slamming the B1 bomber in any way. Just that we've been hearing about the durability and seeing them blow up makes you wonder. No question about Kurt's excellent customer service. I think what is happening is more guys are running more fuel now that we have turbo/twin turbo being used to force more air down the cylinders causing more carnage. .

Charles

Strick-9, that BITES!

Nothing is indestructable, and certainly the B1 seems to have a higher success rate than the early incarnations of the HX40. But it is true that the thing has been hyped as indestructable on this board. Not by Kurt though to his credit - but he can't control what anybody else says it can or can't do.

I guess I need to give my side of the "Story"

I had already been contacted about a B-1 (By one of the Performance Shop he uses) for what I later learned was Strick9's truck. A day or two later I was told that one was purchased used as they were in a hurry to be ready for the track.

I learned the day after the DragRace day that Two Turbos had failed on Strick9's truck a B-1 and a H2e. I then during the same phone call offered a new B-1 at under my Wholesale cost. I also asked to have the Failed B-1 sent back to us for analysis. We have yet to see it.

So what do you other Tdr members think??

Here is a SecondHand Turbo installed on a bombed truck that failed during a racing application. . and was not even purchased from me?

Is there a Turbo Manufacturer that offers a Turbo for Racing applications. And then warranty the turbo to other that the original purchaser? I have not heard of them. .

As for me I have been handling warranties on a case by case basis. Concerning B-1's there has only been Two I have heard of failing and one we have been able to check out and it was a Our Assembly error NOT the Turbo Componets or the end user. We sent a New one out next day air.

I have had other B-1's change hands and suggest they send the turbo in for a "Tune up". That way they and we know what their getting.

None of this is meant as a attack or anything negative. As others have stated some of the posts seem to leave out all the info and/or turn nasty which keeps some of the Manufacturers from even wanting to go online.

Kurt,

My post was not meant as an attack on you or your company. I reviewed my post thorougly before posting to make sure it was accurate detail by detail.

I didn't expect you to honor any kind of warranty on my turbo since I bought it slightly used.

I DID talk to you on the phone about it though. You asked me which style wastegate it had. I told you it had the flat plate with the wastegate blocking screw welded on.

I guess you don't remember that?

There is nothing left of this turbo for you to analyze. That's why I'm not sending it in. I would rather keep it on the wall as a lesson as to what happens when you overpower a turbo.

You offered me another one for a slight discount, but that's too much money for another turbo that won't live in my application.

I only posted because rumors were starting to fly.

It wasn't install error.

It wasn't build error (1500+ miles)

It wasn't dirty oil.

It wasn't hit with nitrous until I had over 50 psi of boost on #2 to avoid the shock.

Strick9, Please call me asap so we can clear this up. It is true I don't recall talking to you ( Only the Shop) after the failure But I do believe you 100%. I want to delete/edit the post to be 100% correct so call ok?

It is merely the fact that you say you Get NO Warranty. . To me sounds like I refused to help out. This is why I would rather talk on the phone to be clear. . Thx Kurt 505-534-0434

Also it could very well be Assembly error... . Look at the Dozens of B-1's that are out there. A couple of them have been running 60 psi boost for more than two years and Several are pushed over 600 even 700 hp with no failures... Nitros+Propane and + Sensored!

So in my opinion... It had to be F. O. D, Installer error (I doubt) or probably after the second failure analysis probably was assembly/Builder error... NOT Product/ Componet failure. .

Thx Kurt

Strick9,

Can you tell if it looks like the shaft broke at the Compressor Nut?

Also If you call and fill me in again on more particulars we may trace it back to the same time or Guy assembling as Devil Dogs turbo. In which case I will ask Ken to give a better deal/Warranty.

Kurt

EDIT FOR TDR MEMBERS

Strick9 and I had spoken on the phone and we have now spoken again and everthings ok. It seems hard sometimes to post without sounding like you are disagreeing or flaming which is what neither one of us was trying to do.

That's the only bad thing about the Internet, no one ever get to hear your (person speakings) tone of voice. I could be nice and calm but look harsh, just depends on how the person reading it takes the response (some people are just born or breed negative... not either of you) Kurt you and Chris are alright in my book.

Jim

Not punt intended here just an opinion.
