Ok - where I live in the State of Washington, vehicles need to pass a smog test. They use to put you on a dyno, but now rigs after 96, they're using the OBD. So, they just plug you in and read I guess any fault codes. Now my question - where do you start screwing yourself up with bombing when you have to pass this. In other words, can you put in bigger injectors, or a fueling box, etc...

Look at my sig, I have not set any codes on my truck. Actually I do set one all the time in the winter and it is from my high idler. I get a vech speed error. I guess the computer does not like to see 1200 rpm for 15 minutes with no speed. Other than that one no others set.

:( Your GVW is what? 8800 lbs isn't it?? Does Washington actually require you to get a smog test for a vechilce that heavy?? We are exempt in Oregon.

:) Just thought of something. I'm running 275's and an EZ-Comp. I have not set any codes. The Comp does give me the ability to just shut off the performance though. Might be worth looking into. I live just over the line from you. I could bring my rig up and see if they would put mine through the test just to see what happens?? Would you be up for an experiment like this? I live in Sherwood just South of Portland. :D

this is interesting you need smog check for diesel in Washington state. In PC California we still don't need them.

M:cool:

Hammersley,

Maybe I am reading it wrong, but it looks like the OBD test ONLY applies to GASOLINE cars and light trucks. It mentions DIESEL cars and light trucks and heavy-duty DIESEL trucks further down. (I'm not sure if our trucks are considered to be heavy-duty trucks or not... ) See below:

Two other changes will be new to all areas:

1996 and newer gasoline cars and light trucks will receive an "on-board diagnostics" (OBD) test instead of a tailpipe check. The attendant will connect a data cable to the vehicle's computer to download information on emission-related engine conditions. OBD will prevent high emissions before they occur.

Diesel cars and light trucks will receive dynamometer inspections. Heavy-duty diesel trucks will continue to receive the current "snap-idle" test, a series of brief engine revvings.

Anybody know what a dynamometer inspection is or involves?

:) Hammersley, Do you still want me to come over and see about the test with my rig so we can see how bombing will affect the outcome?? And just for info, for others out there, Oregon does not require a diesel pickup of 8,800 GVW to test. I just did my renewal a month ago. -Wally-

Mundgyver - you betch'a

Sure, I'll check with these guys at the site to see what we have to do since you won't be getting an actual inspection... . I'll check out the other data the guys have sent me as well - thanks.

I'm back in the area now, so any time you want to get together and give this a try. I think I sent you my phone #. Just give me a call and we will get coridinated. . -Wally-

the dyno test suposively involves putting your truck on the dyno and bascially bogging it out. I've heard that they make you get in too high a gear for our trucks. The trucks blows tons of smoke, but everyone I've talked to has passed including some guys with major mods that can throw up a black smoke screen.

Here in NJ we had a dyno test for gassers & cars, untill they started shredding tires in the inspection stations!!

Diesels don't get checked for emissions, upto 17,999 gvwr and if you've registered 10,000-17,999 gvwr, it's self inspection for everything else.

:) hammersley, I'm off work tommorrow (Wed) at around 09:00 in the morning. Won't have to go back until Sunday. I have some training at the McMinville Aviation Mueseum on Saturday. So what day do you want me over there. Wed, Thurs or Friday. Let me know. -Wally-
