Along the same vein as Donnelly's "better mileage" post, how much power is too much for good mileage? I know it is a bell curve, and at some point your mileage will fall off, but how far can we go until THAT point?

BCFAST, I would concider my truck Bombed in about the middle(see Sig) My fuel economy has gone up not down, towing is way up. That is as long as I keep my foot out of it. (very hard to do #ad

With 275's only my in town mileage is down about . 5mpg (not from racing either #ad
) and towing is down about 1. 2mpg. Power increase was nice but at a cost.

All mileage calculated using miles gone/gallons used with a calculator. Ordered without the overhead electronics.

I added the Va and got over 1 mpg better. Than I added the P. S. boost module and now am getting over 1 1/2 mpg better. Dont know why the boost module added fuel economy but it sure did.

BV and Big Barney,

Are your milage reports based on odometer readings and fuel up calculations or the overhead computer.

Just curious.

in-town mpg's (urban mix-60%stopngo/40%freeway accel/decel) suffered a bit from 16-17ish to a fairly solid 15. 5 when mine went from stock 180-ish (12-valve) to estimated 300-ish----I suspect more due to the built-in mpg penalty of an automatic, becoming more pronounced as you approach the limits of the stock TC, not due to hitting the downhill side of the efficiency curve---my highway mpg boinged up from 18-19 to a really #ad
21 (more % of time in "lockup")

I calculate mine Miles driven divided by gallons. I'm now up to 18. 5 around town and 21 freeway. This is driving unloaded, But I do have a 500lb camper on the back which sticks up from the roof line a little bit. I'm sure I would do a little better if I had a flat shell on it instead.

I Havent cracked 20MPG with my 2500 4X4ETH yet,but the VA is coming. I have the 265 tires so I need to check my odometer against some mile markers next road trip; I have done all my calcs just with odometer and havent even checked to see if its off, hope it is off a litle. I have barely been over 18MPG. I hope the VA helps. I think we should start a club of bombers called "MPG Bombers".

My poor old sickly Ram gives about the same mpg in town, and better on highway, compared to stock. Therefore, the threshold must be somewhere over 510 hp #ad
Of course, I expect mpg would go down somewhat if the extra power were being used all the time #ad

The point is this: diesel mpg is largely a function of the right foot, unlike gassers which give crummy mpg after being hopped up, even when they are driven easily. Secondly, it is important to use a good systematic approach to modifications so the stuff works well together and does not heavily impact use of the engine at low power levels.
