Questions for you "Full-time RVer's"

Ok It's been a while since my last update but I've been busy working, camping, hiking and working on ole Rex as well. All I had left to remove was the block and crank. I used the crane and dropped it onto a pallet dragged it out from underneath the bus and removed the crank and threw the block in the scrap pile. What you are looking at is the torque convertor from the transmission.

Next we laid the "new" engine on a pallet sideways, which turned out to be harder than I thought it would be to do, and rolled the pallet under the bus. I was able to scrounge up a pallet that would fit between the legs of the crane and the bus was just high enough to clear the fuel lines. I had not mounted the turbo on the engine to make it lower.

We got the engine mounted to the trans and when doing up the rear mount on the RH side I discovered that it had broken when I undid it. The cap had separated from the threaded inset so I had to order a new one. It would have been real easy to change it with the engine out but that was not to be the case. Due to a misunderstanding I ended up with both rear mounts. I "might " change the LH one... later.

Great the engine is in the compartment and hooked up too the transmission, always something. Since you have both rear mounts go ahead and change out that way won't have to do later on and will be better.;)

Removing the old block, installing the new engine and the rad were the only times I needed help physically. The rest was all done by myself, one of the reasons it has taken so long. So as you can see the engine in now in place. Do you like my front engine support? :) This thing weighs over 1000 pounds. Good thing I have access to all the equipment and tools I needed to do this job.

The next big thing was getting the rad, charge air cooler and shroud assembly back in place. It had to be lifted up from underneath as well, held up in place while we lifted up the cross member that the front of the engine and the rad assy bolt to.

Shiny new radiator. $$ I have the turbo on and some of the hoses are hooked up but the bus has now been pushed back to it's winter spot across the parking lot. Oh I did need the help of a small tractor to move the bus. here is a picture of the old rad assy. You are looking at the inside of it . Normally the charge air cooler ( CAC) is on the outside but this is a pusher engine so the fan blows the air thru the rad so just as in a FRED ( FRront Engine Diesel ) or any car the CAC gets the air first. I had the CAC pressure check and a couple of small repairs done to it as well as I had to buy a new fan blade as the old one had a crack in it.

Charge Air Coolers, also call Intercoolers, cool down the air. It's like a rad for air. The air comes in thru the air filter enters the cold side off the turbo, and gets heated up when it spins. So since cold air is denser ( has more O2 in it ) it go thru the CAC before it enters the engine. Then the exhaust coming out spins ( drives) the hot side of the turbo which causes the cold side to draw in more air and we do it all over again. The more exhaust you put out the more air you draw in. There is a limit of course. A small turbo spins faster but creates more heat. A bigger one will keep the heat down but you get that "turbo lag". Now if you have twin turbos :) you get the best of both worlds. I'm talking about when they are plumbed together, not like an Eco Boost when one is on each side of a V engine.

That's enough of Turbo 101 for today as it can be a lot more complicated if you want to know all the details.

Well FINALLY i got to work on the motorhome today. Hooked up the CAC piping and air filter hose. I have been too busy or it has been too wet or cold. Always something keeping me away from Rex. I have the week off and hope to get more done. Lots of little things to keep me busy on it. I know the engine will run. The big question is what doesn't work. The PO had the unit for 11 years so what did he live with and didn't get fixed???
