Brake Fluid Change

I was just wondering if anyone's figured out a good way to change the brake fluid on a 3rd Gen? The book says you need the dealer scan tool to cycle the ABS solenoids.



Does anyone know of an aftermarket scan tool with this capability? I did a little looking and none that I've found seem to.



I suppose I could just do it the old fashioned way and then go slam on the brakes a few times to flush the ABS a little but it seems like there should be a better way.

I have a Motive brake bleeder, and have used it to flush the brake fluid on my '05 with no ill effects...

I've never bled 3rd gen brakes, but on everything else I use a suction gun to get most (not all!) of the fluid out of the reservior, then top it off with fresh fluid, then bleed the system to get the fresh fluid down to the calipers.

I believe the general consensus is to flush the system every 2 years. I also use the motive bleeder and try to flush every 2 years, not only does it restore to clean fluid but it removes the moisture and contaminates that destroy your brake components.

When I changed pads this spring, this was the method I used... I figured mostly changed was better than nothing changed.

I bought the universal kit, so I can do just about every vehicle on the road.



I've never used it on my truck, however. The one time I tried, the first bleeder screw snapped off. I've never tried again.

I am not able to go and look right now, but I am pretty sure it's part# 1103.

I guess I'll just try flushing without worrying about the ABS for now. Maybe by the next time I need to do it somebody will make a scan tool that can cycle the ABS solenoids or I'll bite the bullet and pay the dealer to mess my truck up
