I have had a bad lower ball joint do the same thing on a previous truck, get's full of water and then freezes..... mine would let a big bang out of it at times as well when you first applied the brakes.
Finally figured it out, but you won't catch it unless the truck stays in over night so it can thaw out.
Worth a look.
