Speed things up A LOT!

EVERYTHING is going to be slow while the search engine is rebuilding. When you make a post the thing that takes the longest is putting the words into the search engine. Rebuilding the search engine is like posting every post that has ever been made on the site - all 895,000 of them. When I set up the test site it took 5 1/2 solid days to build the search engine on a VERY hot server with no other users on the system. Until a week to a week and a half from now you can't compare current performance with the old site. I will keep notes on what happened to you and start building up a Mac problem file to see if I can find any commonality. I wonder what the difference is between your Mac software setup and akshadow's? I know zip about Mac's (last mac I worked on was a Mac SE in the late 80's).

Experiment with different browsers. Nutscrape 4. 73 was unuseable. 6 was pretty bad. 7 is perfect. I stopped playing at that point. But all my problems were browser related.

Sounds like you did it right. How long did you wait? I've restarted the search engine rebuild which is loading the server down. There are going to be times of extremely slow performance until the search engine is finished rebuilding (approximately 1 week).

I watched the little "status bar", and it went all the way. It acted like it does when we were on the old version. Page kinda flickers, and comes back. Only it/they are still there, as if I hit refresh without doing anything else.

It still says I have the same number of sub. threads.

I even closed out my browser (Firefox 0. 8) for a while and turned it back on. No change. Haven't tried it with IE yet.

Now that is funny. Thanks for the laugh.

This has already been brought up by John but I gotta re-emphasize how SWEET it is that you can put a smilie where the cursor is, not just at the end of the post.

Also I too have to say that the colors are kinda strange. The Atlantic blue is actually teal. and the Patriot blue and the Molten red are both so dark that they look almost black. But I can see a red or blue tint if I look at the monitor from an angle. I wonder if the color problems have to do with those that have LCD monitors like me.

Edit:

I just went to the Dodge site and checked the colors. The colors of the trucks are totally different but those little squares to choose colors ( which Steve said is where he got the colors from ) are identicle to the colors here. So I have eliminated my color settings as the problem... . it looks to be Dodge's representation of their colors are off. :)

Steve, Mac OS10. 2 or 10. 3 or 10. 4, also called Mac OSX is completely different from Mac OS9. I'm using 10. 3. 4 and the browser is Internet Explorer.

The problems I am having are: Flashing TDR Icon and banner ads at the top of each page while every page is loading. The top flashes on and off about 6-10 times every time a new page is loading.

Can't "Open page in new window". With the old site I could position my pointer on the html link, click and hold, and about 1 second later a small menu would pop up and one of the options would be "Open page in new window". Now when I position and click nothing whatsoever happens. It works great with other sites.

Thanks for all the work you do. We really do appreciate it, even if we bich and moan from time to time!

I did NOT get an error message when posting from my home computer.

However, I still say this site has gotten angonizingly slow.

edit Still get the same error message from the work computer.

Hi Steve,

The problem I have been experiencing is after viewing posts and viewing a thread is when I hit the back button I get a error message that I did not reply properly. Before the new format I would be back viewing all the posts.

Thanks,

Kelvin

when i come back to the sight it remembers my name but not my password. everything else seems to be working. i'm using firefox 0. 9. 1 when i just tried it in ie it worked fine, but i hate ie. they don't have tabbed browsing.

Steve, another thing is with this version, the html links just don't seem to highlight right. Sometimes there is a delay before they highlight after moving the pointer over them, sometimes they don't highlight at all. When I move my pointer over the "discussion forums" absolutely nothing happens for 10 seconds or so and then I get the Mac "spinning color wheel", which means the computer has to think what to do. Then after the color wheel spins for 10 more seconds the menu pops down. But none of the menu choices will highlight when I move the pointer over them or even when I click on them. I use this to get "View new posts". This process of getting the new posts seems very cumbersome--the old way was much easier.

Menus timing out before selection

Steve,

If you click on the menu tab (to open that menu) vBulletin is going to the main forum display instead of allowing you to drop down with the mouse and release over the selection you want.

This is a contradiction to Microsoft programming in all of their products whereby you click on the tab to open the menu and then the action takes place when you click on the action item.

This has been causing me no amount of consternation before I realized what was going on.

I feel that needs to stopped. Just clicking on the tab "Discussion Forums" itself should be up a menu, not take you somewhere else.

Confusing - Makes you have to stop and thing about "which software am I using?" yeah, yeah, I know, big boys should be able to think :)

Inconsistant "Next Page" selection

Several times I have opened the "Last Days" posts page. I will read one or two messages.

I always use the right click, New Page method. This is to allow me to see the original thread page instantly because I leave that window open all the time. I just do a Control-W to close the thread window being viewed and the original window is still open.

I sometimes leave the thread display page up for a long time as I get busy and come back to it later.

Well, on these occassions, when I want to see the next page, and I click on the > symbol to increment to the next page..... up comes this error message:

vBulletin Message

Sorry - no matches. Please try some different terms.

This morning it was perhaps more than an hour later when this occured.

Try it with IE please and see what happens. Being that Firefox is on V. 8 (which I assume is a beta release since it isn't 1. 0) there's probably a lot of bugs in it which could be causing problems.

rrausch - Please try Netscape 7 and see how it works for you. Are you running the latest version of whatever browser you are running? If not, please upgrade that and try again too.

John - it seems to be a difference in the way this version handles the view new posts. In this release it just puts an entry into the search engine and it expires it after a period of time.

Guys PLEASE read the announcement at the top of this thread!! I have a big flashing notice at the top of the forums asking everyone to read it. A lot of the questions being asked over and over are in there.

EVERYTHING is going to be slower for at least the next week. The search engine is being rebuilt which puts an extreme load on the server. When you make a post or do an edit the thing that takes the longest is putting the words into the search engine. Rebuilding the search engine is like posting every post that has ever been made in the history of the site - all 890,000 of them. I started it yesterday at 9:30am and since that time the server load has been over 1. 5 the entire time - the server load hasn't been over 1. 5 in months. When the server load hits 2. 0 (which it has many times since yesterday) it means the server is getting requests faster than it can dish them out. When that happens all requests are put into a queue that it gets to when it can. You will have to have some patience over the next week to week and a half while the search engine is built up. I did turn it off last night for a couple hours during the peak traffic period to see what loads and response times would be like and they were very close to normal.

There is also a post cache that will take the next week or so to build up which will also speed things up. Things will be slightly slower with the new software over the old once everything is up and running because of the larger amount of content on each page over the old software (about 30%). But from what I've seen on other sites it shouldn't be very noticeable (moreso for dial up users than high speed though).

Do you have a 2nd browser on your work PC that you could try? Exactly which version are you running again and is there any internet security software on the pc?

Hi Steve,

Appreciate all the efforts you are putting towards the upgrade. It may be just me, but it seems like too much white space on many windows especially when looking through the thread indexes and also when looking through the threads themselves. This seems to slow me down when reading through the threads, (although I could be part of the issue  ).

Also, when I clicked on the "click here for info..... " link thinking that I would read about the new features and bugs, it took me to a page which is almost entirely blank except for another "click here for info..... " link ??? This page had no info on it.

Thanks

George

It was probably just loading slow. Try clicking on it again and waiting and see what comes up. It is a pretty large thread now. It should take you to a thread in the website/roundtable forum.

Two things:

My Linux Konqueror error is back. The link is the view all new posts since your last visit. My browser doesn't see it as a link.

When I came to this page to report that bug, I got the following error:

A script on this page is causing KHTML to freeze. If it continues to run, other applications may become less responsive.

Do you want to abort the script?

The error message showed up while loading the page with everyones post. I aborted the script and the page loaded fine.

Steve, I'm running the latest I. E. for Mac's version, which is 5. 2. 3

I really don't want to switch browsers to Netscape. I believe I tried that tonce and ended up getting rid of it. I would prefer to stay with I. E.

I would just like you to try it and see if that solves the problems. Not that I'm going to not try to get it to work on IE as well. I'm just trying to narrow down where the problems are. There's always a possibility that it's something other than IE causing the problem on your machine. Since I don't have access to a Mac to do testing I have to have you guys try stuff for me.
