Every man needs this one...

Dail Uppers Unite !!!!!

I wonder why I stay in IT.

Parent company issues statement, that no one is allowed to have anything

other than MS operating systems on desktops, laptops and servers. The

statement also reads if another OS is found on the network measures will be

taken to block, remove, contain or disable the system. IT director signs

this without asking anybody in Eng. and IT.

IT director pushed through a P. O. for an application called Business Objects

Business Intelligence. The platform is supposed to gather all finacials from

direct business units wether in excel, access, sql, as400, erp and combine

into one dbase. The P. O. was for $750k.

The CD's arrive and it is a flavor of Linux. I started to build the system

as IT director walks in and sees the screen. Tells I can not have Linux on

the network due to Document she signed. I state it is the software she

bought, Plus we have VMWARE running the majority of the two local sites. By October 2005 all sites will be VMWARE.

IT director calls parent company to explain. Parent company says you signed

Document you will run only windows, shut down all non MS systems. I was asked how long it would take to get rid of VMWARE.

Well we have over 30 virtual servers, to put on standard hardware we would

need 30 servers @ ~$7500 Each. I asked why and was informed of the signed

Document. I asked if that included the Engineerings VAX machines and soon to be setup Sun workstations.

The document is now under review.

I'll take all your copies and licenses of VMWARE! We are going Virtual here also and need something much better than MSVS.

thats really sad.

i have been trying to get AWAY from microsoft anything as much as possible. then again i don't make my living "fixing" software bugs. for me it is just annoying and takes time away from my regular job.

if they get their way, it sounds like you may want to get your resume up to date.

its either that, or your IT department will be growing in order to keep systems up and running.

good luck
