Can someone tell me what a snap idle test is all about? Apparently its now a requirement for the wonderful new smog check ( money grab ) , for Ca.

diesel truck owners ? Thanks !

from what I understand they hit the pedal to floor for a split Sec and if your truck blow's smoke it has like 15 sec's to disapear before they fail it . Not sure on the time limit but that'sbasicly what they do . If your local to so cal the way around this is Reg. in Needles :) No Smog required

Yep, what Simplysmn said.

I just bought a truck in O. K. and brought it into California.

I had the smog test done 3 days ago.

They check the computer for codes, visually inspect, then bring it to 2000 rpm and snap the throttle down to 3000 and look for smoke. It must clear in 15secs. It does not need a DPF to pass this test, just the cat will do.

There was not even a trace of smoke from my 2010.

It went so quick my smog guy was too embarrassed to charge the normal gaser price of $69 !

So I got out with only paying $50. I guess I should be happy but I can't seem to smile.

So... .

If you have a good relationship with your smog guy, anything will pass.

That is until they start putting these trucks on the dyno!

My smog guy is more worried about the weight than anything else. He paid a lot of money for that dyno that is only rated for 8600lbs as was originally agreed upon max weight for testing. Then California changed their mind and required trucks up to 10,000lbs to be dyno tested.
The complaints from smog test station owners fell on def ears and they now have to overload their dynos at their risk.

I did find out that if your gas vehicle will not fit on the dyno, over 10000, big camper, wheel spacers, full time 4x4, or advanced traction control, you can be exempted on the spot for dyno testing.

The Jaguar that was tested before me had traction control that would not allow the rear wheels to turn at a different speed than the front. He was exempted from the dyno.
