gvwr let's be realistic

blue book for rv travel trailers?

Recently I discovered that if you tow a 5er that weighs over 10K and less than 15K you need a type 41 endorsement on your regular Class C license. If your 5er weighs over 15Kyou need a non commercial Class A license. There are similiar restrictions on your license if you tow a trailer over 10K.

My biggest problem in getting my endorsement was that no one in the Oakland DMV knew what I was talking about, nor could they find the written test I had to pass. When they finally found their ducks so they could get them in order the test was not difficult and the cost only $15.

I do not know if the CHP is enforcing the requirement, but at least I am ready for them.

Chuck, I have read the same thing. I wonder if that holds true if your driving a motorhome that's over a certain weight. I told this to a guy at an RV sales lot (a pretty good guy) and he did not know about this law.

John

DMV Pub "Recreational Vechicles and Trailers" dated 7/2000 provides the requirements. If your motor home has a GCWR greater than 26,000 pounds you need a Class B license. If your motor home has three axles you also need a Class B license. The pub goes on to talk about what you may tow within your license.

It also says that with a Class C license you may not tow more than one vechicle. You can with a Class A license.

Good Luck. As I said in my post I was the first in Oakland to ask for this endorsement and the staff had to work to figure out what was required.
