Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) cam and crank sensor

on a 2001 dodge ho 6speed how do you change cam and crank sensors do you need special tools my tach stops working then check engine light comes on then it goes back to normal shows 1693 code

No special tools are needed... . just the ability to contort your arms and hands under the VP44 fuel injection pump to reach the camshaft position sensor. It's held in place by a single Allen head (female hex) bolt. Once you remove the bolt, the sensor may be firmly stuck in it's hole and could require some good tugging or careful prying with a small screwdriver to get it out. The main problem is that you can only reach it with one hand at a time and you can't see what you're doing. But it can be done!

thanks for the pictures that really helps now iknow what im after is the crank sensor also about the same to take out and is it behind the starter

There should be no crank angle sensor on your engine. That was eliminated starting with the 1999. 5 model (I think that was the year).

Having been down this road myself. John is correct no crank sensor on a 2001. Just a Cam sensor. If I recall correctly it is the exact same sensor/part just located in a different place and provides the same functions as the crank sensor.

My 2000 has a Crank Sensor, so it must be a 2000. 5 thing. To change it, I needed to drop the starter, unbolt the hold down and then pull out the old sensor. Mine got stuck on some rust and then I ended up using a small dent puller to get it the rest of the way out. Probably due to the Liquid Car Dissolver that the CT DOT puts on the roads here. My 2000 has both a crank and cam sensor. Replaced the crank sensor about 5 months ago and then the VP44 a few weeks after that. The cam sensor was replaced by the dealer under warranty at 90K. The only symptom of the cam sensor on mine was the tach going to zero and the check engine light coming on. I am getting the same symptoms at 188K and will replace the cam sensor this week. No stumble or miss. According to the repair manual all it does is send signal for tach and for diagnosis of TDC#1 cylinder.

98. 5 - 2000 have crank & cam sensors, 2001-2002 have cam sensor only. When you pull cam sensor out of 2001-2002, look to see if the sensor is damaged. If any signs of damage, look into hole carefully, while having someone bar engine over. The cam tone wheel can break & cause issues.
