im rebuilding my 02 24v cummins thinking about putting a cam in it i do alot of towing with the truck and use it alot and sometimes it sees a friday night at the drag strip whats some good brands or choices to go with , hamilton, helix, or ... whats some oppions truck dynoed 525hp before i pulled the motor list of mods is in my profile Oo.

Cam shaft questions are kinda like asking a guy what his wife likes in bed. Nobody really talks. I run a PDR cam in my 12v and have gotten along well. I'm nowhere near the horse your at but place a call to colt, helix and Hamilton and I'm sure of the three you'll get answers you like.

You mentioned that you do a lot of towing, so if you have an exhaust brake or plan on getting one at some point, you might think about asking the cam manufacturers to what extent their cam degrades the brake's performance.

I don't see how a cam could degrade an exhaust brake's performance, if anything it should make it work better being more air is trying to get through the engine creating more backpressure.

Vaughn, you could very well be right--I don't have an aftermarket cam, but I've read that some aftermarket cams reduce exhaust brake performance. Maybe it's only an issue with the more radical cams? I don't know, but I thought it might be worth looking at since he mentioned he tows a lot.

Yeah could be Midnite, likely these cams have more valve overlap which would give exhaust gases more of an escape route via the intake. . . something I didn't think about.
